A Visit to Elowah and Upper McCord Creek Falls

Welcome to a little tour of two waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side of the river. I did this small hike a few years ago in early April. They are both on McCord Creek in John B. Yeon State Park. So follow along on a quick visual journey of two of the many falls in the Columbia River Gorge.

A shot of a water tank near the trail head. A short distance ahead the trail splits and I will begin my ascent to the upper falls.

After a mild climb all that is left is a short walk around the cliff face to the falls. To the left center of the picture you can see the Bonneville Dam area on the Columbia River.

Here is another shot showing more of the cliff face. Even though there is a railing this was a big test for me. While I love expansive views from high places, exposed drop offs always make me a little skittish. But I sucked it up and ventured on. :)

Here is Upper McCord Creek Falls.

It is a split falls just a short distance above Elowah Falls.

Here is an image of the water shortly before it plunges over Elowah Falls.

Heading back to the junction to the lower falls you can look across the Columbia River to Hamilton Mt in Washington State.

My first view of Elowah falls as I approach from the bottom trail. Near the very top of the picture you can just see one side of the upper falls I was just at.

You don't want to linger too long on this bridge if you want to stay dry. At certain water volumes the mist will soak you almost instantly. :)
