Steem4Nigeria Engagement Challenge Season 5, Week 1 - Elections In My Country
Hello, great steemians,
It's with great pleasure that I am participating in this week of engagement contest and indeed it's starting with a such great and creative contest. This contest is so awesome because it can be easily understood. Indeed for every nation, kingdom, or country to succeed there must be a government that controls and maintains stuff around.
My country Nigeria is known to practice a democratic government, which has three arms of government known as the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government. Most officials of this arms government are usually appointed through voting or an electoral process. My country Nigeria is currently preparing for its general election next year, so therefore the campaign has officially started and every presidential candidate is trying their best to attract more followers before the election with both real and fake agendas.
My country follows a democratic government which is lovely because all power belongs to the citizens of the country so therefore all political positions are supposed to be given by the people, and the leaders who emerge, as winners, are supposed to be servants instead of demi-gods or masters. Although some part of the Executive arm of which the president of the country is among uses its power to influence and intimidate other arms of government and citizens of the country because there are the enforcers of the law.
For example, recently the president of Nigeria changed the Chief Justice of Nigeria which happens to be the highlight Judiciary power, so therefore this has made automatically taken the judiciary arm of government under his control. Also, the executive arm of the government appoints the INEC officials (The Independent National Electoral Commission) which is in charge of the electoral process in the country, this has given the executive arm much more power than they were supposed to have.
This is to say the democratic type of government has failed us all in the country, this is the main reason some groups are fighting against the government, they are asking for either referendum or restructuring of the country and government activities. Democracy is good but when handed wrongly, it becomes devastating and dangerous.
Because Nigeria my country support muti-parties, each political parties host its private or primary election where only delegates and members of the party do participate in voting for the representative. After each primary is concluded the emerged winners of each party contest in a general election conducted by INEC officials (The Independent National Electoral Commission) in Nigeria, These results are been complied and the contestant with the highest votes emerges winner, so therefore the become holders of public offices in Nigeria.
As I had said the electoral bodies are controlled by the federal executive powers and this makes it difficult to bring down or win a government in power, although they might be a change in this year's election because the government recently signed a law that fights against the election rigging in the country.
I am above 18 so therefore I have full right to participate in the election and as an educated citizen who knows my duties and responsibilities towards my country. I make sure my voice and vote count because if I sleep at home and ignore elections that mean I hate my country and I want to see it fall. Although so many youths do ignore the election because of the crimes and rigging now things have changed and youth are moving massively to support their candidate "Peter Obi"
The last election was so terrible because so many electoral crimes were committed by so many political candidates in the country, in some polling units electoral commission officers were bribed so the leftover voting paper was given to political members to fill illegally in favor of their candidate. While in some units politicians would pay money to anyone to vote for them and this is vote buying which is also an electoral crime.
In other units gunmen would attack a polling unit to snatch voting boxes at the polling unit, these polling boxes would be taken to private hideouts where they would be used to illegally vote for their candidate.
The only case I have experienced was when they begged me to sell my vote to their candidate, but as a sincere and honest man, I stood my ground and said no to the evil act.
This process is bad and should be upgraded because it's harmful to the growth of any country or nation, so therefore I am really glad that new laws have been signed to reduce election crime before next year's presidential election.
As a computer science student who knows about Blockchain technology, I would prefer a Blockchain-based application or software that would aid the voting of political candidates into power, as we all know we are currently in the computer age so therefore I would love to start seeing the election process go computerized.
I'd love to call it 9javote Counts, because with this the influence and awesome attributes of a Blockchain everyone's votes will be counted, this process will help stop rigging and vote buying in the country.
✅ Votes won't be altered as long as they have been saved and validated because they are going to be saved in a Block.
✅ Results would be announced faster because validation would be done using Smart Contact instead of human power.
✅ Results would be difficult to hack or access because it is saved as in a Blockchain technology which has so many features to reduce the tendency of illegal access.
✅ The results would no longer be controlled by anyone as the software would run on a Decentralized or Peer-to-peer network, so it would generate free and credible results.
No, I would not want another form of government other than this current one. After all, when properly followed, this form of government gives a lot of power to the citizens unlike some forms of government, for example, the monarch form of government where the power can be abused without any powerful opposition because power belongs to one family.
If followed properly this form of government would produce much more competent leaders because leaders are chosen according to their credibility and not by birthright.
In conclusion, I will say that government is an important duty of both the leaders and followers because if it goes bad it would surely affect everyone, I want to also say that everyone should learn to fully vote during the election so we would produce quality leaders.
Yes, the eyes of the Nigerian youth's are opened now to reality, the massive turn out in PVC registration is a sign that we are all tired of the present leadership.

The democratic system of governance in Nigeria is a good Idea i must say, but the typical problem is, it is never the way it used to be. Rigging of election has been the order of the day and this is getting serious every voting year.
The aspect of citizens having voters card is never enough to conduct a free and fair elections in the country as though we get to see cases like ghost voters being counted among the people that are literally present.
Just as you have said, there should be a blockchain like system of voting which I believe will that this system will only validate actual citizens and then they can cast their votes.
For with this, we will see a new Dawn in the voting system in Nigeria. You have written well, and goodluck friend.

democratic system is one of the best system to elect people that serve the nation. if we do not adopt it then here will be injustice

You have said it all, Nigeria happened to be one the countries i closely followed thier presidential election.
One thing to note, software can play the game for us. But they again, it developed by humans and computers only do what we asked them to do.
Even at level of AI, they are limitations which will need human intervention. So it all about our sincerity, and good intentions to be great citizens of our countries.
It's true sha, but Al can misbehave and it could be controlled to favor one party, at the end the best way is just to have sincere heart
Your method of election could work thou,but u feel the country is too corrupt than to let anything passed through the internet especially when it comes to electing leadership.
