Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 43: My beliefs about Cesarean Section (CS)

I don't see a C-section as a choice but an option to get the baby out safe.

How do you explain CS to a lay man understanding?

A c-section is a way of delivering a baby through a surgical incision made in the mother's abdominal wall when there are complications. It is performed when vaginal delivery isn't safe or when the health of both mother and child is at risk.

A C-section requires courage. It is a show of bravery, sacrifice, and mothering in its purest form. It's the willingness to lay down your body and risk your life so that your child might be born and that your child might live.

Do you think CS should be a choice /right or as situation demands?

I don't think it's a choice because every woman would want to experience the birth process, except for some mothers who feel their body figure is more important than going through that process. Then it's a choice for them; otherwise, C-S is an option, not a choice.

A lot of mothers have been denied the opportunity to experience the free birth process due to one health challenge or another. As much as they wish to have their babies in the normal way, situations, complications, and challenges won't let them, hence the C-section option.

Is there any history or stories about the belief of women who gives birth through CS in your country/Community? Share with us.

It is believed that women who go through C-sections usually do not make it, or when they do, they don't have chances of giving birth to more babies, and if they ever wish to deliver a baby, it must be through a C-section.

Then, the C-section was a very serious issue that, before you go in for it, your husband or any of your family members would have to sign because you would be informed that there's a 50/50 chance of survival.

The general story was that CS is a death warrant; once you go in, it takes the grace of God to come out alive. If a doctor ever told anyone about CS, they would object to it and find other ways around it because the story they heard about it infused fear in everyone.

What is your advice to that person who is refusing this process because of what people will say?

For me, a c-section isn't bad. It has become so easy now that you feel nothing even after going through it. If CS is the only option for you to have your baby safely, then do it and have some rest.

People can only know you went through a C-section if you tell them about it. Because of the way CS is being done now, even you, the patient, will wonder where your baby came from. It looks just like your normal skin, and you have nothing to worry about. Trust me, it's safe!

Will you support your sister, wife to choose CS in case of any emergency during childbirth? Or you allow her to wait until the due time.

I will support you over time. I have supported my cousin's sister, and I made sure I stayed with her through the end. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Instead of risking your life and that of your baby, it's probably better to have a CS and have peace. My cousin wasn't scared during this time; although she has the full support of the family, she went through it at first birth and again at second birth.

CS is not bad after all; it's safe. Waiting until due time could be dangerous, risky, or disastrous. If the doctor suggests a CS, then a CS it should be.
