Steem4Nigeria Engagement Challenge Season 5, Week 1 - Elections In My Country - India

Namaste 🙏 🙏 to all of you. My name is Lavanya. I am a housewife from India.

This is my entry for the Steem4Nigeria community's ongoing contest by #steem4nigeria community.

Knowing election process and its importance are very important to us. Because our elected officials make all national decisions. If we don't choose the right person as a leader, then we won't see any improvement in our country.

So each eligible person must take part in your country's elections. It's our responsibility. Don't neglect it at any cost.

Tell us the governance type in your country and how it effective you think it has been in running in the country's affairs.

India is the world's largest democratic country with a parliamentary form of government. The central government is headed by the Prime Minister, and the head of state is the President. The president is elected for five years only. Then again, we get re-elections.

Legislative powers are vested in Parliament, which consists of two houses The Lok Sabha and The Rajya Sabha.

The Indian Constitution has been amended many times since it was enacted in 1950. The most recent amendment was in 2018, when the government passed an amendment to make Triple Talaq as a illegal activity here.

I think, that this form of governance has been effective in running India's affairs because it ensures that there are checks and balances on any power that one individual might hold, as well as ensures that all citizens have equal rights under the law.

But due to this, we have a lot of benefits while at the same time facing basic problems such as poverty, corruption, lack of infrastructure and many more.

What are the election methods in your country and do you consider them effective? Do you also participate in the exercises?

One of the most common election methods that are employed in India is first-past-the-post (FPTP). This method is similar to those practised in other countries, but it has a few unique features, such as requiring a voter to vote for just one candidate and then going through on a predetermined ballot paper or EVM Machines that lists every candidate and their respective party.

I consider this Indian election method effective, but it consumes a lot of money for arranging needed things for the election.

Yes, I have good experience in this process. After attaining the voting age of 18, all Indians are eligible to participate and vote for their preferred candidate.

This is a process we get every five years, some times in the middle of those years too. Because of the ruling party's insecurity

Share your recent experience of participating in one. Rate this process: fair, good, or bad.

Lastly, I participated in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election held on April 6, 2021, to elect 234 representatives for the State of Tamil Nadu.

On that Election day,The State government declared as a holiday and made necessary arrangements such as polling stations, authorities, and staff to assist voters, among other things.

Before entering the polling station, we need to know our voting ID number. This we get from registration through official websites. For eligibility, you must be an Indian citizen and be older than 18 years old.

I entered the police station room while holding this card, and they set up different party-related staff as well as government staff to check whether we were genuine or not by asking for our voter ID number, name, address, and other details.

After this, they mark my left hand finger with Indelible Blue Color Ink to prevent duplicate voting.

Then, after we go to the EVM machines, we need to record our vote there. It's a secret process, so no one knows which candidate we support by giving our votes. When pressing our needed candidate button, it gives a sound. From this, we confirm our vote is registered.

Like that, I successfully participated in the last elections held in my state.

I have good experience and am happy to see all those arrangements. Because in the morning, government staff inform our polling station and need other details. So I don't get any issues.

After finishing this process, we all took photographs with our fingers where we got a mark for participating in the voting process . Those we share with our family and friends happily.

Would you suggest any method for electing leaders ? Discuss your method.

The government is wasting a lot of money in my country by doing elections the way they are now. So I am not happy with it. Because that money is ours to waste like this, I don't accept it.

In my opinion, if they use Blockchain technology for conducting elections, it will make it more transparent and also possible to participate through our mobiles.

From this, we may avoid the unnecessary waste of money and save a lot of time and manpower.

But it's not an easy task in India because of the large population, illegitimacy, corruption, and many more reasons there. But soon we may see those changes here too.

Would you prefer different forms of governance than the one you currently have, and why?

It is not surprising that India, like many other countries, is debating whether to re-evaluate its form of government. With the world moving towards new forms of governance, such as democracy and republics.

But how should we decide what form of governance is better for India? Because there is some pros and cons in each method. For instance, democracy brings freedom to the people, but it also brings chaos, in some cases. On the other hand, a monarchy guarantees order but does not guarantee freedom for citizens.

That's why I don't recommend any other type of governance in my country.Because I am happy with what we having at present.

Conclusion

India is the world's largest country. So here, the election process is very complicated at the same time, and we need to invest time and money for conducting it successfully without getting any abuses.

In my opinion, if they utilize available technology for conducting elections, it is a better choice than the traditional method.

I like your honest opinion about the type of government. I totally agree with a parliamentary democratic government, that guarantees the balance of powers. In my country Venezuela we openly suffer a dictatorship although many call it democracy, but the facts show the degradation and corruption in all areas of power that for almost 24 years has sunk us as a country. That hurts me a lot and I hope that soon we can change things. I would like a democratic parliamentary government to be installed and socialism, communism and progressivism to be banned, which are the same thing and which unfortunately have invaded many nations. Freedom and justice are the fundamental pillars of a real democracy and guarantee the progress of a country. I think I extended myself too much with the serious situation we are experiencing. Your country is very important but it is very wise, just take care of it from the left system so as not to perish as a country. Greetings and blessed day to you.

Thanks for going through my publication and sharing your valuable review of it.

Thanks for valuable review on my publication.

Hello friend,
I see that your country practices the democratic system of governance, mine does too 😎. However, my country holds re-elections after 7years, compared to yours which is 5years apart. And my country's affairs are headed and approved by the president (head of state) compared to yours which is centered around the prime minister who does the heavy work. It is amazing how your country uses the EVM machine and put in place strict majors to ensure that the electoral process is fair enough. Come to think of it, a blockchain voting system could be more secured and legit, with a more decentralized approach.

Thank you for sharing

Yes decentralisation play a big role for fair and transparent election needs.

Thanks for stopping and leaving wonderful feed back. Take care of you.

The electoral processes in your country is almost same as mine in which all eligible citizens only gets to vote once during the presidential election.

You also made mention of central power being accredited to the prime minister and then next to him is the head of state which is the president, but here in Nigeria we only have President who is the ruler of the country and then Governors which are the head of states.

I also welcome your idea on the blockchain based system of election for with that it will not only save cost but also promote free and fair elections. I hope this will be accomplished in your country. Greetings
