What is a praying mantis
A praying mantis is an insect that is completely a predator. It hunts all forms of insects like grasshoppers, butterflies, crickets etc. Praying mantis are carnivorous. There are about 2400 species of this insect.
These insects are called praying mantis because of how they always fold their fore (front) legs as if they are praying.

Importance of praying mantis

  • Because they are deadly predators, they help reduce the population of other insects that may be pests to crops.
  • They are also prey to other animals which means that they also form part of the food chain

Habitat of Praying Mantis
These insects are found in different habitats like tropical forests, grassland and deserts.

Facts about praying mantis

  • Their lifespan is six months to one year.
  • They can stay at a particular spot for days waiting for prey.
  • They can turn their head 180 degree
  • Male praying mantis fertilizes eggs laid by female praying mantis.
