Good morning is the official language of the people. Now let's talk some more.
Amesiere,
Ututu oma,
Barka da safiya,
E Karo o,
Gu Morin

All these means "Good morning" in different languages, all thanks to Nimrod. We all knew this man brought about language division in the world that's why we have over 7000 + languages worldwide. Grouped to ethnicity, tribe and nationality, language seems to be a barrier, our heritage, our culture, our prestige.

The language of the people is English while the language of the heart is our native language or dialect as it's fondly called. These languages are spoken by not just one but different ethnic groups. It could be that residents in a particular state hears a particular language that residents in another can't. Let's dive into the beauty of languages.

What is the name of your country? How many languages can be found in your country?

From the thumbnail, it's clear that the colour green stands for fertility, agriculture, abundance. That's the country I'm from, the giant of Africa called Nigeria. There's no place like home. In Nigeria, there are about 36 states and a capital Territory called Abuja. In these 36 states, languages differ among them all. In my country out of the 7000 worldwide, my country speaks over 500 different languages.

One thing I like about the languages is that it can be very unique. Let's assume it's Igbo that's spoken. This igbo can be amplified in a way that 10 similar but different subset of the language are brought out. I can recall hearing someone say it's not the Normal Igbo. It's the amplified igbo. Out of these 500 languages spoken in my country, 4 tend to stand out among others. These three follows the popular ethnic groups we have in our country....

  • Igbo
  • Hausa
  • Yoruba
  • Efik

These languages are displayed in the thumbnail of my post showing how Nigerians have different languages of which they speak. One major or official language that's not ours but spoken by everyone in the world is English. This was apparently the first language when God created the first human couple.

Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?

Among the 500 languages in my country, I'm familiar with 20. The contest posts says which I'm familiar with and not how many I know how to speak. Someone can be familiar with a language but doesn't know how to speak it. Do I'm familiar with over 20 languages of which majority is spoken in my state and then others, in various states in the country.

The languages I'm familiar with are shown below. I bet some Nigerians or residents in my state would be shocked as well. The below gives it in details.....The language and where in my state and states in my country it's spoken

Familiar LanguagesStates and LGA
ANAANGIkot Ekpene, Abak, Ukanafun etc LGA's
OROOron LGA
EfikUyo, Ibesikpo etc
EBUGHUMbo and Oron LGA's
EKIT UquoIbeno and Eket LGA's
ETEBI UquoIbeno LGA
ITU MBON UZOIkono etc
IBIBIOItu, Uyo, Etinan, Ikot Abasi, Ekpe-Atai, Uruan, Nsit-Ubium etc
OKOBOOkobo LGA
ILUEOron LGA
IBUOROItu and Ikono LGA's
IKAIka LGA
IgboAbia, Rivers, Lagos.
YorubaLagos, Onso, Ogun etc
HausaAbuja, kebbi, Kano, Katsina etc

These are the major languages I'm familiar with when I hear them speak although I can't speak most of them.

How has this language improved/helped your life and business?

Like I said at the onset, the different languages we have together are languages of the heart. People find great pleasure and joy relating in their dialects compared to when using another or the official English language. They seem to understand better when their own language is spoken. These languages have made it possible for Secrets to be hidden in what ways?

  • When an Igbo man is with an Ibibio man and are conversing with someone else. If the Igbo man wants to say something personal but doesn't want the Ibibio man to hear, he'll use his dialect instead of English which would be obvious. Same with the Ibibio man. One can curse you in their dialects and you may not know.

My language has helped me in my daily life in that, I can go out to tell people about the bible and the good news it offers in their own tongue that's if I know how to speak. Not everyone understands English . So using their language to teach them the bible is peace of mind for them. They'll give you a listening ear and you may reach out to their hearts easily...

Another way it has helped me in business is that cheating is avoided. There's this saying Man help thy fellow man. We seem more good when we talk or converse with people that speaks our dialect compared to those that can't.

  • When an Igbo man goes to the market to buy goods from an Ibibio man, the Ibibio man may likely want to sell at a higher rate knowing fully well it's an Igbo man and they act the same when the reverse is done. So if you are an igbo man and I come to your shop conversing in Igbo with you, you may likely want to sell to me at a subsidized rate since we know ourselves.
Are you willing to teach your children these languages? Yes/No. State your reason.

There's a Saying that Language is a protection. How? I can recall when a particular set of people who couldn't speak that village language were killed. So imagine such happens to you and you know how to speak their language, definitely you'll be saved from the kill. Languages also open business opportunities. If an Igbo man sees another Igbo man coming to seek an employment in a company.

As the manager, he'll likely consider the Igbo guy before others. So I'll definitely love my children to learn these languages and many more of their will carries. The reasons are clear because anyone can be faced with such. You may even be lost in the midst of Hausa. Knowing how to speak and converse with them can save your life.

So in summary, languages are our heritage. We are brought up or taught these languages. It becomes a part of us and we speak our minds using these languages. We pour out our emotions and everything using the language of the heart. It becomes our value, what distinguishes us, what makes us unique and our heritage.

I read this post more than two times. Why? It is because you have done a great job of showing your creativity in writing. I'm amazed and impressed how you arranged your points, words and images.

Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa. We have over 500 languages out of the 7000+ languages spoken in the world. Our languages makes us unique amongst others. You understanding over 20 languages still baffles me... Hoping one day you'll teach yours and more....

Thanks for the invite boss... Actually, I'm not Yoruba, but most people think i am... I'm an Hausa man 😁😁

You have written well bossJ, knowing a particular language can help you get some privileges like when buying things, seeking employment and even in love. Someone may not accept your proposal because of the language barrier. You have written well and I wish you the best in the engagement challenge.

The pretty story of lost lives because of language diversity indeed make me do emotional and strive eagerness to learn much more languages as I can.
