It's a pleasure to always be here while sharing my neighbourhood watch, A big shout out to @xkool24.
But before I proceed, first I'm wishing every steemians A Happy New Month and welcome to October.
- On the day 5th of October, Akwa Ibom State do witnessed a significant event within it's territorial boundary as the local government elections were held for the chairmanship and ward councilorship positions. This very day was more crucial for the political landscape of the dear state, with the likes of various parties vying for control.
The State Political Landscape |
---|
As themis very elections approached, different political parties definitely campaigned vigorously for their own candidates. The main contenders in state were the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Young Progressives Party (YPP). The PDP, definitely led by the sitting governor, His Excellency Umo Eno, aimed to maintain its own stronghold on the state. The APC, a outstanding formidable opponent, boasted the presence of the Nigerian Senate President, His Excellency Godswill Akpabio, while also the YPP was represented by Rt. Honourable Emmanuel Ukpong from the Ikono/Ini Federal House triggering to control ikono/ini federal constituency.
My Election Day Observations in the State |
---|
The very atmosphere on election day was so charged with anticipation as citizens do turned out to cast their votes, movement was restricted in the state during the election period. The elections were so closely watched by many big eyes 👀 (timbers and calibers of the state), and despite the political rivalries here, the process was largely viewed as free and fair according to reports on new but was it actually so?
- Some sources and FM broadcasters report an incident of injury 🤕 as some group of men were attacked by Thugs in Ini LG, the AKISIEC headquarter was set ablaze in Ibiono Ibom LG, many polling units materials didn't arrive venue for election and voters was stranded till dawn in ikono LG and so many other LG.
The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) was definitely responsible for overseeing the elections and ensuring of transparency throughout the process.
Results Announcement |
---|
Though in a surprising turn of events, The AKISIEC announced that the PDP won all 30 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State while APC won in just Essien Udim LG and YPP Nill. Ouh My Goodness 😳 This very sweeping victory of PDP highlighted the party's dominance in the region. So Despite the accolades for a generally smooth election, some troubling incidents were reported. In Oruk Anam Local Government, the APC candidate was no where to be found in his polling unit, and many more incidents happening in different LG, raising concerns about the overall security of people and more during the election.
