Contest Entry | The disease I will eliminate - Cancer
Greetings community! Hope everything is going just fine!
Lord Buddha has once said that '' Health is the greatest gift, one can receive.'' Is it extraordinary? I don't think so. Good health is essential for living a happy and fulfilled life. It helps to bring out the best version of ourselves. It can be physical, mental, and emotional health.
We need to give our full attention to taking proactive measures to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
We have seen that with the advancement of technology, the medical sector also has advanced. But meanwhile, many diseases continue to suffer people worldwide due to various factors. We saw what COVID-19 did to us. So, if I got the chance to eliminate I will not hesitate. But for the contest, I will choose Cancer.
Why have you selected this disease?
Because Cancer is a painful and widespread disease. According to the WHO, in 2020 only around 10 million people died due to this worldwide. It's 1/6 of overall death tolls. You can understand the severity and distribution of it. There are more than 100 varieties, mainly lung, colon and rectum, liver, stomach, and breast. But still, scientists have been unable to find an effective solution for cancer.
Another thing is cancer can occur to anyone suddenly. From small kids to adults. It's very painful and the treatments are also very challenging and expensive. We have seen people trying to collect money for the treatment. Usually, it's a continuous process. Patients have to face various side effects like hair loss and emotional damage.
Due to this cruelty of cancer, I chose to eliminate this from the earth if I got the chance.
Have you lived have you seen someone close to your family or friends have suffered from it?
Yeah, one of my close friend's mother and one of my relative brother died due to cancer. When I was in the university I saw a change in my friend mentally. But he didn't tell me about it at first. Then I had my Industrial training at Kandy general hospital. Ironically, we were building a fully-equipped 12-story cancer treatment center next to the current one. My friend's mother stayed there and I saw at that time period how people suffered from cancer.
There is an injection given to them once a month as I remember. After that, patients were suffering a lot for 2-3 days. Normally there were 3-5 deaths in that ward even though it's a small one.
What do you like least about this disease?
The emotional and physical pain this cause to the patients. And also for their family members. There is a government cancer treatment hospital in Sri Lanka. It's called Apeksha/ hope. I had a few voluntary sessions there. But I can't have the gut to see those smiles inside pain. There are hundreds of kids having treatment there.
So, I least like the pain occurring to them. Fatigue, difficulty breathing, anxiety, depression, and fear. It's really hard to keep mental stability under this kind of circumstance.
Therefore, eliminating Cancer from Earth will be a historical achievement of mankind. It will save millions and put a smile on faces.

Hola querido, me alegra mucho que hayas animado a participar de este concurso. El cáncer es una enfermedad muy dolorosa y controversial. Aquí en Venezuela los pacientes de Oncológico tienen que comprar medicamentos de dudosa procedencia para así completar sus tratamientos pero aún así terminan recayendo años más tarde. Es una triste realidad la que se vive con un paciente en esas condiciones.

Thank you very much for your constructive comment and the verification!! Yeah, it's very hard to see the difficulties faced by the cancer patients and also their families. Here also, eventhough there are government cancer hospitals, most of the drugs have to buy outside. It's not easy for everyone to afford those prices.
Hope one day, scientists will find a solution to this. Surely it will be huge milestone of mankind. I will engage with the other users for sure!!

El cáncer es una enfermedad que no debería existir, sin embargo está, y lo mejor es cuidarnos en la medida de nuestras posibilidades, evitando las cosas que sabemos que aumentan las posibilidades de padecer esta enfermedad.
