Steemit like other social media is social in nature. It's a platform that allows people share amazing and educative posts, ideas and thoughts with other steemit users.
Steemit is made up of different communities that have different purposes.
Every amazing post is rewarded with a cryptocurrency called steem, which can be used for publishing of contents and curation.

Brief history of steemit

Steemit is a combined idea from Ned Scott ( CEO) and Daniel Larimer ( CTO), which is new york based. It was launched in the year 2016( march 24)
The major idea that sprouted out this amazing social media platform was the eagerness to solve the problem of social media ( bad and unusual comments, poor dialogue etc), and therefore bring people together in harmony to write and educate each other and tackle steemit related problem.

Steem is a cryptocurrency that is used as a token or reward for users in steemit.
This currency is like other cryptocurrency which means it's tradable ( can be bought and sold) in the digital market. The only difference between steem and other currency is that steem has different units (steem, steem power, Steem dollar).
Steem is the one used in the day to day transaction by a steemit user.
Steem power are long term investment that can't be easily sold whereas
Steem dollar's market value never drops, it's tradable but not as fast as steem.

How to earn steem

Earning of steem as a steemit user is very simple.
You'll be automatically be given steem power which helps you to post, comment, upvote or downvote a post etc.
After that, every token you get is as a result of your hard work in the platform, by writing amazing posts, investing, buying from others etc.
