Autism

Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a broad range of condition characterised by challenges with social skills,repetitive behavior,speech and non verbal communication. According to centers for disease control and prevention (CDC), Autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed more in boys than in girls.

SYMPTOMS OF AUTISM

Typically ,Autism Spectrum disorder become cleevident during early childhood, between ages 12 and 24 months. It may also appear earlier or later. Early symptoms may include a marked delay in language or social development. The symptoms associated with Autism spectrum disorder is categorised into two;

PROBLEMS WITH COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INTERACTION

Many issues involving communication may appear before age 5. Under communication ' there are things to look at for from birth ie, maintaining eye contact, not responding to their name and also not displaying facial expression at about 9months, not engaging with others at about 30months of birth.

Autistic children also show signs of hyperlexia, which is reading beyond what's expected of their age. Other additional symptoms include

• seizures.
• Excess worry or stress.
• unusual eating habits or preferences.
• Delayed movement or cognitive skills.

SUSPECTED RISK FACTORS FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER INCLUDE:

• Having an immediate family member who's autistic
• Low birth weight
• Certain genetic mutation
• Being born to older parents
• Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins
• Maternal history of viral infections.

HOW TO APPLY FOR SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFITS WITH AUTISM

Autism and autism spectrum disorders can make it challenging for children to function socially and reach certain development milestone. Even in their more mild forms 'autism can prevent adults from working and earning a living.

Conditions like autism are recognised by social security administration (SSA) as potentially disabling and may be able to qualify you or your child for social security disability (SSD) benefits through one of the SSA'S disability programmes.Source.

NUTRITION AND AUTISM

People with AUTISM can experienced increased insensitivity to light,touch,sound and taste. This can impact on the variety of foods that they eat. Those with with autism have the same nutritional needs as everyone else and a balanced diet is important for good health and development.
Some common dietary considerations associated with autism:

• A need for routin around meal times
• Eating a limited diet.

Due to Gastrointestinal symptoms seen in autistic children like constipation,diarrhea;some results have shown that multivitamins and mineral supplement may improve sleep and digestive problems.
a) VITAMIN B6, MAGNESIUM AND IRON has shown that they are not likely to gelp reduce symptoms of autism.
b) OMEGA 3 FATS: Austic children have low levels of omega 3 fat. Research have found supplementing with omega 3 fats may reduce anxiety in children and teens with autism,however it did not help to reduce other symptoms like communication and irritability.
c) PROBOSCIS : probotics are healthy or good bacteria that when eaten in the right amount have health benefits. Once int he colon, the bacteria multiply and help to keep a balance between the food and bad bacteria that live there. probotics are added to foods like yogurt,milk and cheese. Mixed results has been shown on autism and probotics
