New Delhi may be the capital of India, but Kolkata is the cultural capital of India with its literature, music, cinema, and food. Home to 15 million people it is the 16th most populated city in the world. Here is my city in 10 pictures.
Commissioned in 1943, Howrah Bridge is the link between two sister cities, Kolkata and Howrah. Interestingly this bridge doesn't have any but and bolt or no pillars supporting the structure.
Princep Ghat, built in 1841 and named after James Princep, an Anglo-Indian scholar, is a historical site with Greek and Gothic structures. This is a major tourist destination.
The Calcutta High Court is the first High Court set up in India by the British. Established in 1862 the iconic building still has that charm of Victorian architecture. This is my place of work too.
This is the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal, my State. Built in the years 1799 to 1803 it was then called Government house. This historic and magnificent building was designed on the lines of Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire.
20 platforms with an estimated 1.8 million passengers daily Sealdah Railway Station is of the busiest railway station in India. It was established in 1857, order to inter-connect the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) and various parts of Northern and Southern Bengal.
Built-in the 18 century this is the home of Kolkata Police, the oldest Commissionerate in the country.
The 145-year old New Market captures the inclusive, warm soul of Kolkata. Dated back to 1874, it was called the Hogg market. New Market still remains one of Kolkata’s most popular shopping destinations.
The city is associated with the most Bengali community and their most celebrated festival of the year is Durga Puja. Kolkata looks like a newlywed bride during this time of the year.
Tea is revered in Indian households. You can find tea stalls in every nook and corner in India. But the specialty of tea in Kolkata is served in a clay cup. You'll never find it anywhere in the world.
In the age of Uber and Ola (Online Cabs) the iconic Yellow Taxi of Kolkata still fighting for its survival. In 1907, when a car salesman couldn't find a way to sell his surplus cars so he started a taxi service business. Since taxis needed to be stand out, the yellow color is chosen. Hence the yellow taxi of Kolkata.
