Take a moment to reflect on this.

What's that thing you cannot do without? Is it water? Your phone? Electricity? or could it be the internet?

If you chose the internet, then well done. The internet, otherwise known as the web, net or cyberspace is a big part of our lives because we can use it to do a lot of things. Do you want to contact a water company to deliver some packs of table water to your doorstep? Just search for their website and click “order”. There is a power cut and you need to contact the electricity distribution company so they can fix it? Don't panic, darling. Send them a mail ASAP. Or maybe you have a tranty little sister like mine who loves visiting your room once you are home so she can spend the next four hours teaching you the new things she learned during her “science class”. All you have got to do is google how to zip up a teenager's mouth so you can focus on other important things apart from learning and arguing about who established what theory. Perfect!

Lest I forget, the internet is not a cloud— I used to think of it this way when I was younger. (shakes head) The internet is an electronic communications network that connects millions of computers around the world to a single network. This global network of computers communicates using Internet Protocol (IP) and uses Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to identify the best paths to route those communications. This network became accessible to everyone during the early 1990s.

Aha! You must have heard of ARPANET which was used by the military during the second world war and extranet which was a private computer network for a selected few. The internet was built by Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn. It is made up of an incredibly large number of independently operated networks. What's interesting about the system is that it is fully distributed and there is no central control.

That was a ton of information, right? This is just a little background information for our theme for the week. Welcome to Word Chest week 10. Grab your wordlist and get ready to bookmark some new words on your software dictionary. I did mine already

To connect to the internet, you will need an internet-accessible device, a browser which is a piece of software such as Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox etc and finally, a strong internet connection — a secure Wi-Fi network is most preferable.

Is there a difference between a browser and a search engine?
Here is where the confusion lies. A search engine is a website that is designed to carry out web searches. Examples are Google, Microsoft Bing, Amazon, YouTube, Yandex etc. Web browser, on the other hand, uses the search engine to retrieve documents, view pictures, hear sounds, and view video clips from the World wide web. Examples of the web browser were already mentioned above.

On the first page of a browser which is known as the homepage, users are usually provided with a search box where they type in their question or a URL link. A URL link is something like www.steemit.com/ukpono. This is quite different from a domain. A domain is a unique address assigned to internet users. E.g. • com, • org, • biz, •tvngedugov etc.

Have you learned something new? Hang on a little bit, we are not done yet.

Your Android phone, iOS device, computer and desktop help you connect to the internet for one primary reason which is to share information. This is possibly why you are active on most social media platforms like Linkedin, Behance, Dribble, Facebook, Instagram, Yugo and even Steemit. As you already know, the internet is also used to share files. This way, the server uploads any piece of information to the net. Thereafter, the client retrieves this information by downloading or streaming them. To stream is to watch a video or listen to music online without downloading.

On the internet, there are some websites where people write personal opinions, activities, and experiences. These are known as weblogs or blogs. Sometimes, the weblog could use videos as its primary presentation. Such blogs are called videoblogs or vlogs. Yes, that's a word in English (winks).

Uh-huh! Let me tell you the word I love best.

It is cyberpal and it is synonymous with cyberfriend. It refers to a friend with whom you communicate only through the net. Having a cyberpal can be risky sometimes since the internet is a hub for nefarious activities. Who knows, that person could be cyberstalking you?

While surfing the internet, netizens are advised to be precautions by keeping their passwords and data safe. They should also be on the lookout for hackers who try to gain unauthorized access to people's data by creating malware or trojans. Then report any case of phishing and cyberbullying to the right authorities. There is also a need to install firewalls on your browser. This program prevents other computer users from clickjacking or gaining unauthorized access to private data. If you are using Chrome Browser, then this has been set up already.

No, don't be tensed. The internet is not a bad place.

The comprehension above contains about 21 internet-related words. To help you master these words, I created a crossword puzzle exclusively for those in the Steemkids community. If you perused this article then you will find it very easy. I am not mincing with words.
