Introduction

Marriage is defined as the relationship between a man and a woman to become husband and wife. Marriage comes before childbearing.
Do you know that marriage is meant to achieve some purposes like family formation and protection of social norms?. These purposes are the reason why men and women marry.

Meaning of marriage

From the introduction you should have an idea of what marriage means.

Marriage is a legally accepted relationship between a man and a woman to become husband and wife. This means that marriage takes place between two opposite sex, that is male and female.

Marriage can also be described as a binding contract between a man and a woman that join together their possessions, incomes and lives. The two parties now have their things together. They live together as a family. Hope you could still remember what we meant on living together as one family in the previous lesson?.

roles, rights and obligations, not just between the husband and the wife but between the kingsman (relatives) of both partners relative of the wife and relatives of the husband.

Steps to take towards marriage

There are steps to be taken before a man and a woman decide to marry. These steps are as follows:

Step 1

A mature man on a woman have to meet and develop interest in each other: It is unusual for two people to marry if they do not agree to come together as husband and wife. If two people that are interested in each other mutually come together in marriage, they are likely to have lasting and loving marriage.

Step 2

Courtship: This is the time when a man and a woman have a relationship with the intention of getting married. This is the stage when a man proposes to a woman to show his interest to settle down with her. During courtship, the two people study each other to know each other's likes and dislike.

Step 3

Betrothal or Engagement: This is the period of time between a marriage proposal and Marriage. During this period, the couple is said to be engaged to be married. It is the next stage after courtship. The parents of the woman might have made careful investigations into the character and health records of a man and his family and the man's family might have done the same thing. The ceremony takes place in the family house of the woman.

Step 4

Marriage ceremony: This is the final stage when the marriage ceremony takes place. This could take different forms depending on the traditions or religion of the man and the woman.

Preconditions for marriage

Before a man marries a woman there are certain preconditions to be met. These are as follows:

1. Involvement of both families: in most traditional societies, Customs demand that parents have a say in who their son or daughter marries as husband or wife. The involvement of spouse' families is very important for certain reasons. For instance, in indigenous societies, there are some categories of persons, groups or relatives that are forbidden by custom or tradition to intermarry.

2. Bride Price: It is part of the custom in indigenous society that the groom's family takes an amount of money or property call bride price otherwise called bride wealth to the bride's family.
   However, the payment of Bride price is not the same across the world. For example in India, the wife's family rather than family of the husband pays the Bride price. Whereas, the practice is unknown in European countries.

3. Religious Factor: In most African countries, the marriage ceremony is accomplished after some form of religious activity. The reasons for each religious activity in marriage include: to evoke ancestors of both spouses to libation, to pray for blessings and protection for both spouses. This is not only observe in traditional marriage, it is observe more or less in Islamic and Christian marriages.
