Social Studies Lesson 9: Purposes of Marriage.

A lot is learnt from this social studies class and all thanks to your tutor @udyliciouz. Marriage is indeed very important in our society, anything that happens out of wedlock is said to be an abomination in our society today and this makes marriage important.

Marriage makes everything you do with your partner legal and no one looks at you guys with disgust or says bad about you and your partner as you are all legally married, social studies turns out to be one of the simplest subjects but vital things are taught under social studies. From the knowledge gained in class I will be answering the questions below.

Marriage can simply be defined as a legal union between two partners (a man and a woman). Once this union is complete these partners become husband and wife, and this makes their relationship a legal one which will be accepted by both the family and the society.

Every country have different Tradition and customs that must be observed before marriage takes place, on my side I am from Nigeria and we have customs that we are known for, these customs will be listed below:

• courtship: This is that stage where both parties stay with each other, trying to figure out each other's hobbies, the type of person their soon to be husband/wife is, are they the talkative type or they are just reserved? All these questions are answered during courtship.

• Introduction/Knocking Of Door: At this stage the man makes his intentions known to the family of his finance, he goes along with his father and all his kinsmen carrying along some palm wine, kola nuts, garden eggs and some other items. On this day of introduction is when the man's family is given a list of all the things needed before their daughter is given to him.

• Marriage Ceremony: On the fixed day of the wedding the man brings all the required items, once all items are confirmed the marriage proper kicks off, after all traditional rites are performed they are declared husband and wife.

A lot of things must be done and a lot of conditions met before a marriage takes place and these includes the following:

Traditional Rites: For any marriage to take place all traditional rites must be met, the elders must be given what they requested, the elderly women of the family are as well given all that they asked for before the marriage is allowed to take place.

Payment Of Dowry: This is another pre-requisite for a marriage to take place, if dowry payment does not take place then automatically there won't be any marriage ceremony.

No doubt marriage is a good thing, everyone wishes to marry in a grand style and wanting to marry in a grand style has hindered a lot of people from been with the partner they wanted to be with.
