Living together as family

Human beings are social beings because they live in groups and hate being alone. Could you imagine how you would have feel if you were living alone without anybody?. You would feel lonely and life will be boring and meaningless. Man cannot satisfy his desires alone without others. That is the reason human being live and work together. Living together is one of the factors that make strong family. Strong families spend quality time together.

Some of the advantages of living together as one family

Family members enjoy a lot of benefits when they live together as one. Some of these benefits are;

1. Protection: This is the state of being safe from harm or destruction. It is easier to attack anyone who lives alone. Whereas, when parents and their children live together they can easily call on one another if any of them feel threatened.
   Imagine if you are alone in the house at night and a stranger came knocking at the door; how will you feel?. I believe you will be afraid.

2. Happiness: This is the state of being happy. Families whose members live together are happy.
   How will you feel whenever your mummy or your daddy is not around for some time or both parents are not around for a long time. Lonely and unhappy right?
   When they eventually come home, don't you feel glad that they are back? This tells you the importance of togetherness.

3. Unity: This is the condition of being one. Family members who live together see themselves as one. It is very difficult to cause division between a husband and his wife who are always together. An outsider will not find it easy to disturb the peace of a united family. When children live together with their parents they become United and strong. Children who are brought up by persons other than their parents or Guardians might find it difficult to relate well with their biological parents.

4. Education: This is the process of impacting or acquiring knowledge( formal and informal) through teaching. Education of children start from the home. Parents educate their children at home and also finance the formal education of their children in the school. Do you appreciate the financial support of your parents?. Could you imagine how life would be if you were living without your parent?. It is good for family members to live together for the educational progress of their children.

5. Good Social Behaviour: Family is the primary social unit in the society and it is an agent of socialization. When members of a family lives together the parents have the opportunity to teach their children the customs and traditions of their land. They also teach their children acceptable behaviour in the society. Mistakes of family members are easily corrected when family members live together.

6. Removal of Loneliness: Living together helps to remove loneliness in the family. Husband and wife need each other, parents need their children and siblings required assistance from one another. Living alone may lead to psychological problem called depression.

7. Spiritual Well-being: Spirituality is described as a force that help reach beyond ourselves. It deals with religion, feelings and beliefs rather than with the physical aspects of life. We need to recognise and take care of our spiritual life. Living together as one family encourages spiritual well-being which provide some benefits to the family.
   The benefits of spiritual well-being in the family include:
   i. Provision of guidelines for living
   ii. Provision of a sense of freedom and Peace
   iii. Provision of spiritual heritage
   iv. Helping a family member to cope in times of trouble

8. Coping Ability: Families whose members live together are strong families. They are able to see stress or crisis as an opportunity to grow and learn; that is they have good coping skills. Family members unite and pool resources together when things get tough. By sharing responsibilities in the family, each family members can focus on the things he/she can do to help solve the problems of the family.

9. Help outside the family: Living together as a family assist members to get help outside the family when needed. Some problems or crisis cannot be resolved within the family. Families whose members lives together are smart enough to know when they need help from outside. Members can easily seek outside resources, such as their religious groups, friends, neighbours and extended family. Some issues can seem so overwhelming that it takes the person from outside the family to help put things in order.

Homework task

1. List and explain 5 advantages of living together as one family.
2. Explain the disadvantages of not living together as one family.
3. Mention at least 2 socially accepted conducts learned from your family.
