Greetings to you dear kids,

Its a pleasure to welcome you all to our fourth lesson on social studies.
I am @udyliciouz, your social studies' teacher.

This lesson will be followed by a task which you are all expected to participate.

Natural Disaster

A natural disaster is any tragic event caused by forces of nature which Results in serious damage on people's property, injury and lost of life. Most natural disasters involve physical forces that are beyond our control and may occur unprovoked though there are few instances where the natural disaster is triggered by man's action.

The opposite of natural disaster is man-made disaster.

Examples of natural disaster

• Earthquakes
• Hurricanes
• Tornadoes
• Floods
• Winter storms
• Wildfires.
• Landslide
• Avalanche
• Drought
• Hail
• Volcanic Eruption
• Lighting Storm

Earthquakes: an earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground which sometimes causes great destruction, it comes as a result of movement of large rooks within the earth's crust or volcanic action. Damage bridges, houses and may cut power and gass lines.
nuclear explosion and fracking for oil are human activities that can trigger an earthquake

Hurricanes: A hurricane is an strong tropical storm with very powerful winds up to 119 kilometres pre hour that comes with heavy rain. It is a system if forces that behave like a huge Carousel sometimes known as a cyclone or typhoon. Can uproot trees, pulldown houses, cut electric lines cause injury and lost of life.
The chain reaction from climate change due to global warming can create or make Hurricanes even worst.

Tornadoes: A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the clouds to the ground. Some are strong enough to uproot trees, pull off the roof of buildings resulting in tremendous destruction of life and properties.

Flood: floods are huge flow of water that rises and spreads over the land due to heavy rains or a blockage in the path of a river, dam break. Floods may result in drowning, building collapse, damaged infrastructures, outbreaks of epidemics.
Poorly built/poor management of dams and dumping in the revers can clog waterways resulting in flooding.

Avalanche: A sudden downward rush of a large amount of dislodged snow, ice, or rocks that runs down a mountain side, burning farmlands, houses and people.. ice skidding have triggered a number of Avalanches

Drought: A drought is that period of time when a country, an area or a region experiences a serious reduction in forms of precipitation, Causing crop failure, crippling food production, drying up pastures, resulting in famine.
Deforestation has been the leading cause of Drought in many places.

Volcanic eruption: this is a violent explosion of gass, ash, rooks and molten rooks. The eruption projects materials far up into the sky resulting in shork waves and serious air pollution that can affect visibility. Flowing hot lava damage surrounding farm land.

Note that this natural disasters are unevenly distributed among communities, regions and countries. For example, people living at the foot of a mountain are likely to be affected by a volcanic eruption and quakes, while people swelling in plan areas with no mountains will not have any eruption but may be affected by flooding. While there are disaster prune areas affected by a number of natural disasters, there are places that have not recorded any noticable natural disaster for many years.

Causes of Natural Disasters

The major causes of natural disaster are natural phenomenons though some are caused by human activities. Below are some of the causes of natural disasters

  • Moon activities
  • Tectonic movement
  • Soil erosion
  • Deforestation
  • Ocean currents
  • Air pressure
  • Seismic waves
  • Pollution
  • Global warming
  • Mining

Effects of Natural Disasters

Some common effects of natural disasters are -

  • Fatalities depending on the severity of the situation some people may loose their lives
  • Injuries and emotional impact people get serious injuries and may die as a result while others feel the effect for a long time after it might have happened
  • Damages to infrastructure the aftermath of a natural disaster may destroy roads, bridges, hospital, communication systems, pipe born water, electricity distribution systems and other amenities
  • Food and water scarcity having access to clean water after a natural disasters may be very difficult as the water may be polluted
  • Public health issues and diseases hospital may not work properly for some time after the disaster and some illnesses may become endemic to the area
  • Environmental issues the Area may become polluted after a natural disasters
  • Economic impact some natural disasters like drought can seriously affect the production of food and other materials in the affected areas.

Preventive measures

It is impossible to completely stop natural disasters from occurring, for that reason, it's is best to always find ways to mitigate it's impact on lives and properties.

Early warning systems Installing a number of warning systems that will alert people days weeks or months in advance will help keep people safe.
Preparing emergency kits people should have a measure of emergency preparedness with medical kits, and other supplies.
Being informed residents should keep themselves updated with news, Information sharing and weather updates
Evacuation Procedures authorities should make clear evacuation Procedures known to people living in disaster prune areas.
Reforestation areas affected by drought should seriously engage in afforestation
Risk reduction methods both individuals and the authority should building shelters and stocking such places with nonperishable food supplies.

See you next week.

Keep yourself busy with this homes

  1. Define natural disaster using your own words
  2. Mention some natural disasters that are peculiar to your home country.
  3. What measures would you suggest the authority in your area could setup to mitigate the effect of the natural disaster that affects your area
    4.Explain the following term:
    • Lighting Storm.
    • Wildfires.
    • Landslide.
    • Hail.
  4. If you have a personal experience involving any natural disaster, please share with us.
