Contest: What is a Family

Hello friends in Steem Kids and Parents, greetings 🖐️. I will be taking part yet in another contest today organised by @udyliciouz in this noble community.

What is a family?

A family at its most basic consists of adult man and woman from different lineages not related by blood coming together in marriage and also with their offspring or children, usually living together in a private and separate dwelling. This type of unit is mostly referred to as a nuclear family and is believed to be the oldest of the various types of families in existence. Sometimes the family include not only the parents and their unmarried children living together but also children that are married, their spouses, and children, and possibly elderly dependants as well; such an arrangement is called an extended family.

Name the types of marriage practice in your country.

The types of marriage practice in my country, Nigeria are as follows:

• TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE/CUSTOMARY MARRIAGE.

• MARRIAGE UNDER THE ACT/STATUTORY MARRIAGE.

Describe the major differences between the types of marriages mentioned above.

Traditional Marriage/Customary Marriage: Traditional Marriage also known as Customary Marriage, is the type of marriage according to the Custom or Native Law of a particular society or place which could be the custom of the bride’s community or ethnic group where the Customary Marriage is performed. For a Customary Marriage to be valid, these requirements must be fulfilled:

Consent of Parents and guardian of the bride and consent between the parties to be married This consent must be given before the celebration of the marriage. For a Traditional Marriage to be valid, both parties have to agree to marry each other and the parents who will receive the bride price also have to give an approval.

Payment of Bride price. The groom must pay a bride price to the parents or guardian of the bride as the case may be. The groom must comply with their Marriage list or requirements in order take the bride away from their family.

The Marriage must be between Citizens of Nigeria. That is to say that the Marriage between a Nigerian and a foreigner is void under the Customary Law.

The Marriage must be free from affinity. This is to say that parties to the Marriage should not be related by blood or birth otherwise the marriage will be void. In most customs, it is an abomination to marry or have sex with someone of the same blood. Thus, where a Marriage is between two people of same blood e.g. brother and sister, mother and son, father and daughter, male and female cousin, such marriage by virtue of its afiinity is void under the Customary Law. Also, the marriage must be conducted in accordance with the custom of the particular society.

Marriage Under The Act/Statutory Marriage:

A statutory marriage also called the registry marriage in Nigeria is actually a voluntary union for life of one male and one female to the exclusion of all others in line with statutes. Or simply, a statutory marriage in Nigeria is a monogamous marriage. Examples include marriages done at the Court Registry and marriage done in a licensed place of worship (church/mosque marriage).

Explain five benefits of living together in the family.

The five benefits of living together as a family are:

1. Protection: This is a situation where one is kept safe from harm or destruction. When a family lives together they feel protected from danger and always look out for each others interest.

2. Good Social Behaviour: Families who live together are able to teach their children good and acceptable social behaviour. They are also able to teach the children to see stress and crises as opportunity to learn, become better and grow in any social situation they may find themselves.

3. Happiness: Families that live together are able to do things together which brings joy and happiness. They share in their joy and sorrow together.

4. Maintaining Good Family Name and Reputation: When parents in a family have good reputation and live a positive life, the children tend to emulate this positive behaviour thereby maintaining the family reputation.

5. Education of Children: A family that live together see to the formal education of the children by paying the children school fees, provide books and the general upkeep of the children's education.

Is a house help a member of a family? Explain.

A House help, I will say is also a member of the family because she lives together with other members of the family and should be treated as such. There should not be any form of maltreatment or descrimination between the house help and other members of the family.
