Caffeine is a daily necessity for most of us in order to get through the day. However, because caffeine is a drug, drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks can have a negative impact on your health. Caffeine causes dehydration, mood swings, insomnia, and can exacerbate symptoms of diseases such as Interstitial Cystitis Disease. If giving up caffeine is one of your goals for 2022 (I'm right there with you), there are a few short and long-term consequences you should be aware of.

Even those who only consume one cup of caffeine per day, can experience withdrawal symptoms. Keep in mind that while those withdrawal symptoms may make you feel like the world is ending or that someone's head is about to be bitten off , the majority of those negative effects will only last a couple of days.

There are so many wonderful reasons to give up caffeine if you've noticed a drop in your energy levels, sleep, mood swings, or it appears to be affecting your health in other ways. Despite being used to treat headaches, drinking a daily cup of coffee, soda, or energy drink has been linked to frequent headaches! Ugh! That is not a win-win scenario! Worse, caffeine causes our blood vessels to constrict, resulting in slow blood flow! Those withdrawal symptoms include temporary headaches, so be prepared and avoid any caffeine-containing headache medications! Weight loss is an added benefit of quitting caffeine! Even coffee drinkers can benefit because we frequently flavor our coffee with creamers and sweeteners that are high in calories and, simply put, bad for our health. And don't think that drinking diet soda will help you lose weight. Diet sodas have been linked to weight gain just as much as regular sodas. The sugar substitute in diet soda may even make you crave sweets rather than avoid them!

Caffeine withdrawal may make you feel more relaxed. You won't have those early-morning or late-night jitters, which can reduce stress. It may even help to alleviate your workplace irritability. Just keep in mind that quitting will make you irritable for a few days as your mind adjusts to the withdrawal symptoms of the caffeinated drug. Quitting soda may make you feel more rested. Caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and soda, have an immediate effect on our body's sleep-wake cycle. Because the drug remains in our bodies for several hours, a midday soda can keep you awake at night. Caffeine abstinence can help you sleep better because your body will recognize when it's time to sleep.

Caffeine is a drug stimulant, so it will most likely make you tired during the withdrawal period. That low energy level, however, will only last a few days, and the benefits of quitting caffeine will be greater than you could have imagined! If you are concerned about your energy levels, reduce your caffeine consumption gradually rather than abruptly stopping. If you only consume one cup of caffeine per day, reduce it to one cup every other day until you no longer require the addictive beverage.
