Honesty is the best policy

Honesty simply means been truthful, reliable, trustworthy with no trace of cheating, stealing or lie.

It is very rare to find honest people in today's world, moral values are gradually fading away.

The quest for wealth has made a lot of people to choose dishonesty over the quality of being honest.

Dishonest attitude is mostly seen in the financial sectors, where employees are so bent stealing money from their bosses through many dubious means.

Like in my country Nigeria, most times I overhead people say that there is money in Filling station work, that at the end of the month you can earn twice as much of your salary if only you were smart enough. How smart can one be to earn twice as much of your salary? When you're been paid #25,000 by the end of the month, so before the month ends you've already earned more than your are being paid. Well we all know how these guys tamper with their meters just to earn this much. This is a form of dishonesty.

I could remember how some people lost their jobs at my former place of work because of dishonesty.

What most people have failed to understand is that honesty is the best policy. Man may not give you your due reward for that honest act but the creator sees everything and he will reward you in due time.

My story goes like this......

Some years back at my former place of work. I have worked in a cinema, and part of my job then as a team member was to usher in guest coming to see a movie into there various screens and then after the screen Time is over, we'll Rush in to clean up the hall for the next movie.

On this fateful day, after the movie ended. I rushed in to clean the hall alone since there were just few people who used the hall. As I was picking up the used popcorn packs and can, I found a wallet and I picked it up to know the content in it. Lol and behol! Bundle of #1000 notes. Though I didn't count to find out how much is the sum, but I just knew it's more than 70k.

See me see temptation, me that didn't have breakfast before coming to work, with this money I will sure eat like a rich kid. Hmmmmmm, infact most of this misplaced items we find in the cinema the owners hardly come back for them. After all, there's no I.D, no passport or any vital information in the wallet except for the money. Therefore, I can just trash the wallet and keep the money for myself. Too many thoughts running through my head.

But based on home training and bible trained conscience, I couldn't keep the money because it wasn't mine. I had to follow the company's standard of recording lost but found items in the lost but found book, stating the date, time and the hall the item was found for easy Identification just incase the owner comes.

I disclosed it to one of my colleague and she commended me. Three days later, the owner of the said wallet came. According to him, he knows the money is gone but he just said let him come and ask if we found anything to justify his curiosity. Unfortunately, I was off duty that day but those on duty attended to him and gave him his wallet with the money still intact.
This man was in awe like he has never seen a thing like this, he tipped my colleague and manager that day.

So my colleague told my manager that I was the one that found the wallet. My manager was impressed.

The next day, when I resumed duty my manager gave me my own share of the tip (#2000) I was so happy. And he used that little act of honesty I displayed to give the morning pep-talk with the theme- Honesty is the best policy.

The moral lesson here is
Do not take things that do not belong to you

Report any lost but found item to the appropriate authority
