🏃‍♂️ When You Try to Run Away from Leadership and Also Disrespect Your Leaders

There was a time in my life when the last thing I wanted was responsibility especially leadership. I saw leadership as a burden, a trap that would steal my peace, my time, and my freedom. So I did everything to avoid it. I said “no”to anything that looked like power, and worse I secretly judged and disrespected those in leadership, thinking they were only there to show off or control others. But life has a funny way of teaching you what you refuse to learn.

It Started with the Department

It began the day I was nominated to become President of my Department. I remember laughing and saying, “Me? President? No way.” I tried to decline. I even asked others to vote for someone else. But the students saw something in me I didn’t see in myself.Eventually, I accepted and that was when everything changed.Leadership didn’t just stop at the department.

Then the Faculty Called

Just when I was adjusting to my role as departmental president, the Faculty leadership invited me to become the Head of Presidents meaning I’d now be overseeing other department presidents.

At that point, I paused and asked myself,
“Why me again?”
But once again, I said yes. I couldn’t keep running. Maybe this was no longer coincidence maybe it was a calling but , at last there tears .

⛪ Then the Church Came Knocking

Before I could even breathe, my church called. They needed someone to serve as the Youth President. And if that wasn’t enough, the Choir also asked me to become their leader. In the space of one year, I went from dodging leadership to carrying four major leadership roles: Departmental President
Head of Faculty Presidents
Church Youth President
Choir Leader

💭 What I Learned from Saying “Yes”

At first, it was overwhelming. I wanted to run. I wanted to cry. I wanted to go back to being invisible. But slowly, leadership began to transform me: I learned patience I learned humility
I understood the pain, pressure, and power of those I once criticized
I became a voice, a shoulder, a servant, not just a title-holder.
I realized that true leadership is not about being the best it’s about bringing out the best in others.
✨ “Leadership is not about power, it’s about purpose. And when purpose calls, running is no longer an option.”

🎯 Final Thoughts

If you’re someone who’s been running from leadership, or maybe even disrespecting those who carry it, take a moment to reflect. Leadership isn’t always easy, but it’s a path of growth, influence, and humility.I didn’t choose leadership it chose me, and now I’m better for it.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

Many of us have feared leadership, thinking it's all about stress and sacrifice, but your story shows it’s also about growth, service, and purpose. Sometimes, the very thing we run from is what we’re called to become. I admire how you embraced each role, even when it felt overwhelming, and allowed it to shape you into a stronger, wiser, and more selfless individual. Your transformation proves that true leadership is not about titles, but about impact. Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s a reminder that purpose often finds us when we least expect it.

You show your strength and quality, I believe greater positions await you. You were born to be a leader. Congratulations

Amen , but there is more to it .
Thank you
