Everyone struggles and fight hard to escape the sting from poverty, and that's why everyone is motivated to work hard, consistently.

This is another lesson from @udyliciouz, which we are to talk about poverty and how it can be reduced. Many people take on many measures to ensure not being poor. Before we get into "how we can reduce this poverty", let's have a clearer view on what poverty is.

What is poverty

In my secondary days we once treated this " poverty" topic and my teacher made this definition, she said " poverty is a state of being extremely poor". And I agree to that definition.

We can also see poverty as a state of not being able to meet the necessary basic needs, which are; Food, clothings, shelter. And this needs are very basic and important to human existence, which we cannot do without. So poverty is a state of not being able to attend these needs.

Causes of poverty

  • Conflict
This is actually one of the main causes of poverty, because any area that conflict occurs, it's usually a loss to people living around there, and also people that have properties in that area, a clear example is the xenophobic attack issues, when some hoodlums took that advantage to break into shoprite's, stealing goods worth millions and thousands of naira, which if it was an individual business and also sole income of the individual, he will actually get into depression and basically poverty, so conflict has an impact on bringing in poverty.

  • No Jobs
This is another reason for poverty, as there's no job for people to apply for and be paid, they're many graduates looking for jobs, but none and they have wandered about the whole country, looking for any good job that will pay then, so the can attain their needs, but to no avail, lack of jobs/works is a major cause of poverty.

  • Poor Education
Poverty is also caused by poor education, i.e not being able to go to school. In Nigeria Free Education was brought in our state, tho being free, it has helped many people but even with this free education, you still need money to go on, and that's the case because the poor masses still know that education is not free and they are afraid to send their children to school. In this current era, education has almost every jobs, even to plaiting of hair in popular places you need your certificate to apply for the job, to show that lack of education can lead to poverty and not being able to attain this job.

  • Natural Disaster
This disasters leads to loss of properties. A farmland can be destroyed by flood, clearing away the goods and everything planted by the farmer, which in turn will leave him in a bad state, of poverty and depression, after working for days and months.

  • Lack of infrastructures
Not enough infrastructures, like companies and many other things can lead to poverty.

Consequences of poverty

  • Death
Poverty leads to death, in the case of not being able to buy food, and eat a good and balanced diet, it will lead to death.

  • Illiteracy
When one can't attend schools, it will have an effect on the person in which he will be an illiterate, and not being able to match up with others in the society.

  • low self-esteem
It brings up this doubt, that people can't believe in their selfs anymore, and can't seem to see themselves in the same level with others

  • Inability to achieve one's dreams/goals
Many people had different dreams and goals, to achieve these dreams, money will be involved, so poverty kills many(not all) dreams.

  • Depression
Many poor people are depressed, always thinking of how the next day will be.

Poverty alleviation strategies
  • Provision of extremely free Education
  • Provision of jobs
  • Creation of Employment opportunities
  • Government welfares
What I can personally do to alleviate poverty

We are all passionate and ready to help the poor, but at times we don't have that capability to also give a lending hand to the poor masses, but we do it the little we can by offering gifts. What I am planning to do to help alleviate poverty is, to join this support program I see in the streets, they cook and bring it down to give to the poor people, it is always a thing of joy for them.

Can steemit help alleviate poverty?

Yes, steemit can help in it's ways, through many projects steemit has been able to support the poor, by giving out items. Through many areas like the @worldsmile project which has helped many people. And I also learnt that the steem team, did make certain contributions then, to help these poor masses.

I invite @onlyonefave @inemesitjustus and @brightoekeh to take part
