MY FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL ; ENGLISH LANGUAGE ❤
There were many subjects I used to learn back in school. They included ones that involved calculations as well as non-calculative ones. Examples of the subjects that were centered on calculations are Core and Elective Mathematics and Economics. Biology and English Language were part of the non-calculative subjects.
Personally, I didn't like calculations, I found them very difficult and confusing so I was never interested in Maths or Economics.
My favorite subject in school was English Language. The English Language was taught as a subject in my school. It was divided into four main components; i.e Grammer, Literature, Composition, and Comprehension. The English Language was my favorite subject not because I was good at it. It was my favorite because I wasn't good at the other subjects😂.
I grew up with my late grandmother and speaking or learning English wasn't part of my life unlike what we see these days in most homes. My home was a typical Ghanaian home where everybody spoke either the Ga language or Ashanti Twi. The moment you begin to speak or try to utter an English word, you become a laughing stoke that day in the house. Because of this repetitive discouraging behavior from the home, it affected me so much that, I wasn't the outspoken type in school. I was always quiet in school not because I can't talk but because of fear of making mistakes and giving my mates a reason to mock or tease me.
When It comes to writing English words, I wasn't that bad so my class teacher Madam Grace Ahin noticed my potential and took it upon herself to do extra classes for me after school. Her sacrifice built my confidence and gradually I began to coil out of my timidity shell.
Fortunately for me, my parents came for me from my grandmother's place and my father augmented Mrs. Ahin's work by getting me a home tutor for all the subjects but I still loved English as compared to the other subjects.
I was not always first in class, but my English was outstanding and it reflected everywhere I found myself. I won several awards in other subjects like the overall best student in Social Studies and Biology. I participated in the spelling bee competition in our zone. To some extent, I was contesting for my school in Science and Maths quizzes.
I once won first place in an essay competition in the school dubbed "Discipline; a ladder to greater heights
I had a policy that, so long as the subject has English words in it, it could be understood and learned easily. And surprisingly, it always worked for me.
Mrs. Ahin wasn't my favorite teacher initially. Aunty Nadia was my favorite because she was my grandmother's friend. Because of the immense kind of love and attention that Mrs. Ahin showed towards me, I came to really appreciate her and there was nothing I didn't tell her. At a point, my class thought she and I were related. Mrs. Ahin taught me English and Social studies in school.
After school, I stayed in my hometown for some months before coming back to the capital. Whiles in my hometown, I used my knowledge in English and other subjects to organize free extra classes for the young students within my area who were preparing to write their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Those who paid attention and took my teaching did extremely well and are now in Senior High School.
With the English language, I can read and write and understand perfectly well. Today, I am able to write my own articles and poems. I have over ten poems now and countless articles.
If it wasn't because of the love I had and still have for English, joining steemit would have been an issue to some extent.
These are links to some of the poems I have been able to write since I joined steemit.
