It is my pleasure to participate in this contest and I hope we are going to share useful information on this particular contest. Poverty is a global issue but it varies from one country to another, poverty rate in Nigeria is higher due to some lack of income and basic things of life. So today I will discuss about said contest below

What is Poverty?

Poverty can defined as the condition that affect individual, family and community wellbeing such as lack of shelter, hunger, unable to read and write, drinking unclean water etc. Poverty is a global phenomenon that usually affected individual in their community.

In Africa especially in Nigeria some peoples find it difficult to eat three good meal in a day because they lack financial resource to purchase such food for themself and their household. Poverty does not give poor peoples respect and freedom of speech, their speech and appearance will not be recognised as the members of the society.

List and explain 5 causes of poverty.

These are the following causes of poverty:

• Lack of access to education
• Unemployment
• Laziness
• Poor medical facility
• Corruption

√ Lack of access to education: Government should offer free education to their citizen so that poor children can benefit from it. Poor peoples in rural area were lack behind in educational sector because their parents cannot afford huge amount of school fees. There are also dilapidate class room that were abandoned by the government not because their is no money to build the new one is because they do not want poor peoples children to have full access to education.

√ Unemployment: Unemployment is very common in Nigeria, their so many graduate that do not find government job which make life difficult for them to survive. Some of them often depend on their poor parents for their daily needs, majority of youth are ready to work but to find job is the main problem and even if they find private job such private company will exploit them without mercy.

√ Laziness: Peoples are so lazy to put their effort in doing something that is productive, most of them find it difficult to go out to search for something that will bring money and they also prefer to depend on others for their survival.

√ Poor medical facility: Nigeria is a largest population in Africa where citizens does not receive adequate health care especially the poor peoples. Poor peoples are neglected to the extent that they cannot afford hospital bill for treatment.

√ Corruption: Most government official embezzle public fund, money that should be use for infrastructure are use for personal purpose which is not supposed to be. If government spend this money effectively the life of citizen will change for better.

Explain at least five consequences of poverty.

Consequence of poverty include the following:

• High crime rate: Since individuals cannot find their way to survive they will now engaged themself to commit different illicit act. Some youth who joined bokoharam and banditry is because they see this group as the alternative to survive.

• Homelessness: Poor peoples cannot afford good house, they spend most of their income on house rent and they often sleep in unsafe place which affect their health life style.

• Infant Mortality: Adult peoples die when they are not have the means to eat good meal, some of them often die when they can not afford hospital bill.

• Inadequate childcare: Poor parents cannot take care of their children due to some lack of basic need such as shelter, food etc. All these can have negative effect on the developmental of such children.

• In ability to participate in decision making process, poor peoples are not allow to contribute to the growth of a country and their voice are hardly heard. Sometime they don't remember them as the part and parcel of the society.

What are the poverty alleviation strategies you know and how can it helps reduce poverty.

Many country have their own strategies for alleviating poverty and this strategies work for some country for example United state of America, UK, Canada etc while it doesn't work for some country e.g Nigeria, South Sudan, Gambia and the rest of Africa country.

• Operation Feed the Nation (OFN) is the programme for alleviate poverty in Nigeria, this programme was established during Obasanjo regime. The main aim and objective of this programme is to help the citizen enjoy surplus of food in the country, although this programme was hijacked by corrupt peoples in government but if this programme was successfully implemented poverty in Nigeria could be reduce drastically.

• National Directorate for Employment (NDE) is the agency that provide employment opportunity to the graduate in the country, this agency still operate in various states in Nigeria. Last year I attended their workshop base on entrepreneur skill and the topic is Agricultural extension every body benefit from this workshop at the end of this workshop participant were given money to established their own business.

• Nigerian agricultural and cooperative bank (NACB) Were established to offer loan to the poor farmers in the country so that they can provide large amount of food to the peoples in the country. They also give farmers fertilizer so that their seed can germinate quickly without any problem.

• Directorate for food, road and rural infrastructural (DFRRI) this programme were established to improve the life of peoples in rural area. Those peoples in rural area need basic amenities such as good road, adequate health care, available water resource e.t.c.

What can you personally do to alleviate poverty in your locality.

• To help disadvantage peoples in our society by giving them cash, giving them cash will help them to establish their own business so that they will not depend on others for their survival.

• Poverty can also be alleviate through education, good quality education can help the poor peoples to break the cycle of poverty, education will help such individual not to be marginalize and they will also have access to freedom of speech.

• Poverty can also be alleviate by giving poor peoples good food to eat in order to have energy and strengthen needed to work. Another things is to provide them clean water to drink so that they can stay health always.

Can steemit helps alleviate poverty? Explain.

Steemit can help alleviate poverty in low income country like Nigeria, if majority of peoples are freely register on this platform they will earn and also benefit from high quality contents write by other members in this platform.

Conclusion

Government should established an agency that will deal with poor peoples only to meet their immediate need, poverty can be reduce if we pay necessary attention to those basic amenities such as available water resources, good road, infrastructures and finally implement programme that will assist them to enjoy their life to the fullest.
