MY FAVOURITE TOPICS OF SCIENCE
One will ask why I like biology. I love to learn about living things and how they relate, it gives me an in-depth understanding of the natural world. It also helps me to learn how to conduct research, solve problems, organize and think critically.
I think it is very important to study plants because we depend on them so much for everything in our lives – food, oxygen and materials to make things with. Without the existence of plants, we wouldn’t be here. One thing about plants which interest me is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the way that plants use carbon dioxide and light to make energy and food. Plants absorb and release oxygen from their leaves, which humans and other animals need to breathe. I find it really amazing that plants can make the energy they need just from sunlight, in the case that they don’t need to eat food like we do. Moreover, learning about the diseases of plants is interesting. It allows individuals to use loads of different techniques to look at both the genetic level and protein level. This is relevant because there is always the need to improve crop yields for security. This broad knowledge of science in biology has made me realise how essential plants are in our lives. Plants help prevent flooding and soil erosion by absorbing thousands of litres of stormwater. It reduces wind speeds and cools the air.

One other interesting topic in science is evolution. The reason is that there is so many variation in species around us. Evolution deals with the change in the characteristics of species over several generations. Good understanding of evolution helps to understand and know how to solve biological problems that impact our lives. Human evolution for instance helps to understand genetic variation and how the diversifying genes impact humans’ immune systems. I think evolution is amazing – how we went from a single bacteria to become humans, whilst the same bacteria also evolved into amazing plants like the giant sequoia tree. Understanding evolution is also central to the advancement of medicine. Concepts such as adaptation and mutation inform therapies and strategies to combat pathogens, including influenza. Knowing the evolutionary relationships among species allows scientists to choose appropriate organisms for the study of diseases, such as HIV.

Biochemistry on the other hand is one interesting topic in science. This is the branch of science which investigates and explores the chemical processes related to living organisms. It deals with the study of bacteria, viruses and other organisms to better understand the chemical basis of life. Studying how different chemicals and molecules interact with each other inside biology is fun– like how things in cells work with each other. I think it’s amazing how different biological chemicals work together – they can fit like a lock and key.
