Good day, Steemians! It's yet another great pleasure for me to participate in this contest organized by this wonderful community, @zero-to-infinity. In fact, we are asked to write about the best project which we have ever done, which reminded me of the great project, Experiment to show the necessity of air for transmission of sound. Even though I did many projects, but this was what inspires me a lot. So in this contest, I am going to demonstrate an experiment to show that sound needs a material medium (air) for transmission. But I can't take you through the experiment without letting you know what a sound is.

What is sound?

Sound is a form of wave motion that is transmitted via an elastic medium from a vibrating body to a listener. Musical sounds, for example, are typically created using a variety of methods.

  • Stringed instruments: guitar etc
  • Percussion instruments: Drums etc
  • Wind instruments: whistle etc

All these instruments generate sound by causing an object to vibrate. The sound produced can not be transmitted if there is no medium (air). For example, spacemen can not speak to each other except using the radio during their moon walks as a result of no air on the moon.
To believe this, let me take you through an experiment to confirm it.

EXPERIMENT TO SHOW THAT AIR IS REQUIRED FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF SOUND.
Apparatus

  • Electric bell
  • Battery
  • Switch
  • Vacuum pump
  • Conductors
  • Rubber band

Procedure

  1. Hang the electric bell from the rubber band inside the bell jar.
  2. Connect the electric bell to the battery and the switch.
  3. Connect the bell jar to the vacuum pump.
  4. On the switch.

What you'll notice after you close the switch.
The bell will be ringing. As the bell is ringing, air is gradually depleting from the jar by the vacuum pump. The sound of the electric bell also dies down gradually. As the air becomes less and less dense, no sound will be heard again when all the air in the jar is removed.

This clearly shows that sound can not travel in a vacuum.

Conclusion
I hope that after reading this content, you will recognize that there is a significant impact on science by enlightening us on amazing aspects that we are unaware of.
Finally, I hope you should try your hands on the above project to know that air is necessary for sound transmission.

Thank you for reading.

Nice to read your post .

Thank you .

If we input water instead of air what will happened. Can this acoustic wave transmit through it?
