All the clubs were financially damaged by the corona virus. They were looking for a way out. On the other hand, UEFA has been thinking of changing the format of the Champions League since 2024. In the Swiss model, 36 teams will play at least 10 matches in the group stage. The announcement came before UEFA passed the new rules.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is being touted as the mastermind of the league, the brainchild of Juventus president Andrea Agnelli. He was the founding president of this league.
