Hey Steemians,

I am so excited about this contest because i love stories of freedom fighters and i will be talking about one of them. He is a hero to my country because he fought for the independence of my country, Nigeria. His name is Chief Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe.

BRIEF HISTORY
Chief Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe who is from the eastern part of Nigeria, Anambra state to be precise was born on the 16th of Nov. 1904. He was fondly referred to as Zik and one of the leading figures of modern Nigerian nationalism. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar where he began his secondary school after which he was transferred to Methodist Boys High School Lagos, there he met some friends that later helped him in his political career. He was so determined to study outside the country so he applied to schools in the United States and was accepted by Storer college, after which he transferred to Howard University, Washington DC. He gained his masters degree at Lincoln University.

However, Chief Ben Nnamdi promoted pro-African nationalist agenda while he worked as an editor for African Morning Post and founded the West African Pilot Newspaper which he used to promote nationalism in Nigeria. He became the first Nigerian to be named to the privy council of the United Kingdom. He became the first president of Nigeria, from 1 October 1963 to 16 January 1966. He also served as the second and last Governor-General from 1960 to 1963.

Dr Nnamdi fought relentlessly for the independent of my country Nigeria, and because of his unforgettable hard work, He has been named after some important places in Nigeria and they include

  • The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport located at the capital of Nigeria, Abuja.
  • The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
  • The Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe Press Centre, Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos.
  • Azikiwe Avenue in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
  • His face is actually on the Nigeria’s ₦500 note.

Chief Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe is a great hero that can never be forgotten in a hurry in Nigeria, his legacy lives on.
