Hello everyone,

Here I came up with another post for the contest this week. This time I'm going to explain and describe about the culture of my country "Srilanka".

Image

As you can see in the National flag of our country there are two colours green and orange to demonstrate that our country is a multicultural country. There are people speaking several languages and people believing several religions. So we celebrate may festivals in the country giving every religion the equal position.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Sinhala and Tamil new year is national festival celebrated in Srilanka with all Sinhalese and Tamil nationalities. This a festival celebrated by the whole country. The Sinhala and Tamil new year is on 14 the April every year.

Image

Sri Lanka has a history of 2500 years so from the time this new year festival is celebrated. We consider it the new year when the earth completes a revolution around the sun and starts a new beginning. There are 12 zodiacs in the zodiac cycle. The earth revolves around the sun passing the 12 zodiacs one by one. When the earth comes to the ""Pisces zodiac" that is the last zodiac of the cycle. It is on 13 th April. Then the earth finishes its journey and starts the new revolution again on 14 th April at a precious time by passing the "Aries Zodiac".

Image

There is time that the new year is starting at that time people do the lights and crackers and celebrate the start of the new year. At the precious time of cooking people light the fire and start cooking. The first food everyone cook in their hearth is the Milk rice. We make milk rice and many sweets for the new year day celebrations. We usually make kokis, oil cakes, cake, and many other sweets which are really authentic to the festival.

Image

We wear new clothes and then we worship our parents and elders and get their blessings to our future life. The theme of new year is sharing. So we share the food with our neighbours and with our relatives. On the new year day we get food from Tamil friends and we give our Sinhala style food to Tamil friends. We have the chance to taste all types of food and sweets made by our neighbouring houses. Not only in Srilanka, Srilankans who live on other countries too celebrate this new year with their foreign neighbours.

Image

At the end of the day after having all the meals and sharing them we organize New year festivals on the day or day after new year the villagers get together and play new year games. They are not just games they are authentic games played during the new year season. Tug of war, pillow fight, coconut attacks are some common games done.

So this is the way we celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil new year in Srilanka. I think I could describe the culture of my nation to all of you today. I invite my friends @mrsokal @jyoti-thelight and @kyrie1234 to share their culture with us. Thank you for reading the post. Have a good day.

Wow! Glad to see the way you celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil new year festival in your country. It's very different from the way we do ours here in in Nigeria and I'm glad I learnt about yours too.

The milk rice you talked about, is different from the normal rice we eat? Like a special kind of rice?

Hello friend I must say that Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a very big culture in your place. I will love to attend it. Thanks for sharing.
