Weekly CRICKET Review - XLVII | Happy Retirement Champs
So, how is the World of Cricket treating you in the New Year? You already know that I am sharing a weekly wrap-up of what is happening within the Cricket community. So, it's the 47th edition now!!
In the last week's edition, New Dawn for West Indies, I shared with you a comprehensive summary of some exiting ongoing series. So, let's dig into what's happening right now!
Retirement Alerts
Australian veteran batter David Warner, one of the best in all three formats, and one who loved in every corner bid farewell to Test Cricket a few weeks ago. And recently he announced his retirement from the one-day internationals as well after his final Test match. He needs a separate article for sure.
And with more heartbreaks, South Africa's former Test captain and classy opener Dean Elgar also retired from International Cricket after the India series. With a 12 years+ career, he specialized in the Test format playing 86 matches and scoring 5300+ runs with 14 centuries & 23 fifties.
India tour of South Africa
It's a full series including, 3 T20Is, 3 ODI s, and 2 Tests. As I said last week, the T20 series was finished 1-1, then the ODI series was won by India 2-1.
The first Test match was held in SuperSport Park, Centurion in SA which became a nightmare for the visitors. SA proceeded the things with a rather new team, where India got all the usuals.
Putting to bat first, India couldn't do much against the SA pace attack led by Rabada. Only Rahul could contribute with a superb hundred under pressure, making just 245 runs overall. Rabad got a fifer and the debutant Nandre Burger got 3 wickets.
- In the reply, SA put a total of 408/10. Dean Elagar got to the final dance in his last series scoring 185 runs. With a 163-run trail, India could score just 131 runs, with only fifty from Kohli. South Africa won by an inning and 32 runs
Pakistan tour of Australia, 2023-24
It was a year of Australia and Pat Cummin's. And they proved that for the last time in 2023. Pakistan is touring Australia for 3 Tests and Aussies have already won the series 2-0 with a match remaining.
Batting first, Australia got a mammoth total in the first match, 487. Warner scored 164 in the match, in his last series, and almost all the batters contributed nicely to the total. Aamer Jamal took 6 wickets in his first match. Anyway, Pakistan's openers got a decent start, but after their fall Aussie ballers didn't give much to offer and Pakistan got out for 275 runs.
With a lead of 216 runs, Aussie added another 233 runs before declaring, giving a target of 450 runs. But it was juicy from Pakistan and got all out for just 89 runs cheaply. Lyon, one of the underrated ballers in Test Cricket clicks 500 Test wickets.
Pakistan almost pulled off the second one, but Aussie led by Pat Cummins sticked once again to win the match. Batting first, Aussie put a total of 318 runs. Pakistan did well to break the starts of Aussie batters. Anyway, the chase was not up to the mark, as Pakistan got all out for just 264 runs. Cummins took a fifer.
But the Aussies's second inning was interesting. Shaheen Afridi and Mir Hamza sent 4 batters to the pavilion for just 16 runs. And then Marsh was dropped at 20. It allows him a century of partnership with Smith. And they got out for 262 runs giving 318 runs chase.
Pakistan proceeded the chase pretty well. Masood scored a fifty and Babar got going and then Rizwan and Agha Salman got the target under 100 runs with 5 wickets remaining. But Pakistan couldn't get the job done. Cummins broke the partnership with two quick wickets and Starc did the rest. Pakistan fell from 216/5 to 237/10, having a 79-run defeat.
