FLASHBACK OF QUARANTINE DIARIES| Steem Sri Lanka: Contest Series – Week 03 | Hard work paid off

in Steem Sri Lanka4 years ago (edited)

Well, the entire world is going through a difficult time period with the COVID-19. History shows us details about the mysterious twenties. From 1720 – 1722, a plague ravaged the city of Marseilles in France killing over 100,000 people, from 1817 – 1823 the first Cholera pandemic began in India killing over 100,000, from 1918 – 1920 Influenza Pandemic killed over 50 million innocent people around the globe. I don't know whether it's a pattern or not. But here we are in 2020, witnessing the same.

We all have to be safe and understand our social responsibilities.

In Sri Lanka, the country was locked down from March I guess. I was in university and we were sent home for two weeks. But, eventually, it became 6 months. So, let's see my quarantine diary.

Being with the family

With the situation, we received the gift of time and freedom. I badly needed that with the stress of academics away from home.

Home is not just a place. It’s an emotion. Mom’s food, dad’s stories, annoying brother and sisters, and also my bed make it like heaven. I am fortunate to have a big family. I have 3 sisters and a brother. And my father has 10 brothers and sisters and my mother has 7. Most importantly they are not much far from our home. So, it's nice to have them around again.

Vegentation

Well, I feel I'm talking about this a lot recently. But, I was pushed more into farming in the quarantine period. My home garden is around 2 acres, separated into two by a small canal. There's a part we usually cultivate near the canal. But it was filled with weeds and small trees without proper care. So, Mother and I took the challenge to grow our own. I don't want to show me as an exceptionally hard worker but within a few days, we were good to plant.

The transformation

We basically focus on fruits and vegetables for daily usages like okra, cucumber, cowpea, ash-pumpkin, chili, tomato, onion, manioc, papaw, and many more. I don't know their English names.

The cultivation

As raining wasn't frequent those days, I arranged a pipeline from our well. It's a sprinkler system, through electric mortar, just have to control through valves. Boy! the output came at a price, I had to bath several times with loosing of connection. But that was a great experience.

So, with hard work, we received the prize. And currently, also, I'm taking care of the garden and adding new medicinal and important species to the collection.

Reading

Well, we are a family of bookworms. I got the hobby from my sisters starting the journey with 'famous five'. In my home, the internet connection was pretty poor. It helped me to read more books. We have a collection of more than 100 books. Hope to grow it more.

My collection of Books

Well, other than this I had online lectures. But, as I said earlier with the poor internet connection I got permission to have videos and go through them later. Yeah... I had more free time.😅 😅 I watched some movies and Tv series also. And a few experiments and new things. It's better not to mention. 😅 😅

I know that the quarantine is not the same for everyone, especially for daily wage workers. But for sure, we all have learned a few things.

  • Prevention saves more lives than acting at the last moment
  • Domestic food security is a matter that every country/ home should improve
  • Living in your native country provides you much comfort in crisis
  • Every country should embrace free public health care and free education
  • No astrologer predicted this crisis and alarmed the countries
  • Finally, we should obey the heartbeat of nature

So, that's how my quarantine went. I think it was a productive period in my life. Thanks to @sandu for a great contest. Sorry for the post at the last moment.

Thank you!
Best Regards!
Stay safe!

Yeah... After a long 6 months vacation in the home is a lot

totally agree with you. 👏👏

seems like you apply engineering theories into practical use. very well-done.

I also faced with those difficulties due to poor internet connection. But sometimes, it is a blessing.

having a bookworm family is also a blessing.

Thank you for the participation. Good Luck with your post 🙌🙌

Thanks, @sandu. Yeah, I got a nice experience in the vegetation those days. And still, they are working. 😅 😅 Yeah, from the school times my sisters and I read books, but with time it was missed little bit

@madhumunasinghe thank you very much... As we liven in the main house of father's, it's just like the center of the family. So, it's nice to have a lot of relatives around.
