Welcome to the Steem Game Development community

Welcome! This is a community for discussions related to developing games that run on the Steem blockchain. The games can be anything from complex video games with digital collectibles to a simple journaling game that is played by posting, but the common factor is that playing on the Steem blockchain is an element of how the game works. Any aspect of developing a game is open for discussion: game design, questions or tips and tricks involving code, abstract discussions about incorporating a token economy into a game, post mortems, dev logs, or anything else that's mainly about the “nuts and bolts” of making a game on Steem. (In industry jargon a “developer” often means a programmer, but this community isn't restricted to just talking code, it's about all aspects of making games.) This community is also open to all levels of skill and experience, from aspiring newbie to seasoned pro.

What this community is not for

This isn't a community for announcing games or trying to attract players. Those things can be important, but communities that are focused on gaming are a better place for that, this is about discussing the process of making games. Whether you love marketing your stuff or consider it a necessary evil it can have the unfortunate tendency to take over conversations. When you're posting here you shouldn't have to worry about whether your post is “good marketing”, and you shouldn't have to worry about whether your post will get lost in a sea of press releases. Hopefully having a rule like this can make it easier for us to “talk shop” about game making.

Let's build something

The Steem blockchain has a lot of potential when it comes to games, the goal of this community is to try to move closer to realizing that potential by having a place where we can share knowledge and wisdom, make connections, or just lend each other moral support as we try to make games that work with Steem.

(Thanks to @steemcurator01 for the suggestion that a community like this could be useful in their response to my post about Day 9 of the 100 Days of Steem).

Interesting project. I hope to collaborate but when it comes to technical language I still don't feel comfortable in English. I prefer to use my native language, Spanish (I'm from Spain). I will try ^_^

Cool, love where this is going.

Dear @danmaruschak

I've just learned about your community from latest blog by @steemitblog. Hope you and your community will flourish.

Are you on Discord by any chance? I would like to reach out to you. Perhaps you can join our server and DM me? https://discord.gg/v2vHBB

I wonder: why not? Don't you want game developers to write about their own games build on steem chain within your community?

this is about discussing the process of making games.
In that case I don't see many people really posting within your community. That's very small niche and you're making it even smaller. Just being honest.

Writing about their own games is fine. I'm trying to draw a distinction between marketing messages like "Coming soon!", which is something focused at players or potential fans, and posts about making their games. The rule isn't meant to be "don't mention your own game", it's meant to be "don't write your posts here like marketing material".

That's very small niche and you're making it even smaller.

Yes, I am aware that there are not a huge number of posters (today) that post on this topic. But trying to increase the size of the community by including other topics wouldn't necessarily help foster discussion about this topic. Having a community that doesn't seem active can be a barrier to participation, but so can a community that is busy talking about other stuff. My goal here isn't simply to have a large membership or high volume of posts, it's to try to foster activity related to the topic. It is possible that this goal will fail. I hope it doesn't.

I've been running games on Steem for a very long time and looking for assistance in automating some responses to the games. This just might be the place where I find the help I need since I'm not a programmer and have no idea how to even interact with the blockchain.

Yes, if this community can help people with "different pieces of the puzzle" to find and connect with each other then that will be great.

Super! Thanks.

Thank you for setting up this Community.

Look forward to more news.
