Good day everyone of this great community, it my pleasure to participate in the above mentioned subject. As an agricultural engineering student, I am always task with the duties of finding a better way to improve land cultivation to increase food production.

Vegetable are plant grown with the sole purpose of harvesting its edible part which are either fruit or leaves for human or animal consumption. Examples of vegetable include:

• Tomato
• Carrot
• Onion
• Cabbage, to mention a few.

Vegetables has become one of the healthiest food available for human consumption. It so healthy some people only consume vegetable, they are called vegetarian. My favorite vegetable is tomato because of its multi-purpose such as in salads, cooked vegetable or ketchup, it is also a good source of vitamin C. Tomato is mostly grown during the warm season.

How tomato are cultivated

The first step of effectively cultivating tomato is land preparation. This is done by clearing (harrowing) and preparing the land in ridges (ridging) to accommodate the seeds. The seeds should to place within 60-180cm spacing to each other with soil depth of about 15cm. Within few days with regular water supply the seed begin to grow. Under ideal condition it take 60 to 90 days to fully mature and ready to pick. The best fertilizer I notice that gives more yield is phosphorus fertilizer.

Best cultural practices to improve yield

• Regular weeding: Weeding is the removal of unwanted plant from cultivated field. Weeding is done manually with the use of hoe or rake and this is found to increase farmers yield.

• Adequate water supply: In a situation where the crop water requirement is lower than what been supplied. The alternate way of rescuing the vegetable is though irrigation, mostly surface irrigation where water pressure and gravity is use to move the water to the farm. This is possible with the use of a pump and pipes.

• Pest control: Some insects love feeding on tomato leaves. One effective way of avoiding this is the use of cone to cover the plant making it undetectable to the insect.

Harvesting of tomato

Tomato are hand pick during harvest from farm. A mature and ripe tomato is usually red in colour while, an unripe tomato is green in colour.
