As students, after completing our secondary school education, the next step is to prepare for university. It is assumed that Anyone who wants a bright future should have a bachelor's degree in any field of their choosing.

Students apply for courses in the University based on their parent's wish, peer pressure, passion or on false standards they have set for themselves. The thought of getting into the University makes so many people very happy for various reasons which I may not know. Some people just want to go as far away from home as possible, while some people want to take the opportunity to try out some of the things they have been fantasizing about over the years.

The University environment can be very cruel, harsh, inconsiderate, brutal, and heartbreaking. But that doesn't completely define it; it can be so many things depending on the individual living the moment.

People hear about courses any just blindly apply to study them without proper research and investigation. This can be very challenging for some people because at a point you may be caught in a dilemma. Often times these problems are suffered by the individual and may result in depression if care is not taken.

Students who apply to study a course that was chosen for them by their parents often regret it years down the line. The course might be too difficult for them to handle or they may discover that they lack passion and interest towards the course of study and it can be very bad for the future of the person. Parents should allow their children to make important decisions for themselves.

For the students who apply for a course because their friend also applied for it, this is not advisable. Different people are built differently and nothing can change that. Doing what you like does not make you less of a man or a reasonable person. We should always follow our mind and passion. You can only effect changes in a field you are truly passionate about and that is what matters in reality.

CONCLUSION

In a country like Nigeria parents only want their children to study things like medicine, engineering, law, and economics. They forget that every functional society requires other fields. If everyone is a lawyer, engineer, accountant, doctor, who will be the archaeologist? who will be the historian? who will be the anthropologist? Who will be the agronomist? who will be the farmer? who will be the primary school teacher? We neglect so many fields and that is bad for our development.

Most people travel abroad because they have functional systems. The systems weren't put in place in one day. We need each other and we need to be diverse.

You have written a very nice article @nwabueze and in truth i agree with you, i don't believe it is the parents who should should a course for their children as the child has to find out where he is good and much poised to do better in other to prevent fustrations that comes with studying what they are not good in

Our parents just need to face reality.

When you look at this country you will realize that many sectors are dead or not functioning hence this has a way of destroying job opportunities such sectors create or lets say limit the job opportunities. When you look at the odds of getting a job after studying such course relating to that sector you find out that you end up with nothing unlike in the Western world. For example someone studying sociology in Nigeria, nothing for you or history which can be someone's passion. That's why most parents push their kids to what we tag major courses because of the job opportunities available.

There are no jobs because we don't realize the importance of such courses. Just take psychology for instance, we feel it's not that important because we don't understand it. Most Nigerians are psychologically damaged. We feel a course like archeology is not important yet we wait for foreign archeologists to come to Africa and discover artifacts made by our ancestors. We are simply a primitive society.

Exactly and that's why even if such course is ur passion it is advisable not to study them in this country

Very insightful post, you have highlighted factors we tend to ignore while making choices about our college life. I must say, reading would’ve been made easier with a little bit more inclusion of markups, but a good post nonetheless. We appreciate your effort and contribution to the community. Thank you

I get that parents want the best for their children but choosing a path for them isn't a good choice because it has numerous consequences. Although there are times when the student is lazy so they go for the course that would be easier for them and this also undermines their capabilities and makes them go astray so the choices we or our parents make really is detrimental to our future. A very valid point. it could also be a collective decision.

Hmm. This have always been a problem.

When I was to get to University, they wanted me to be a doctor. I had to use diagrams to convince them. We really need to educate our parents about it❤️😊

Happy you were able to do that.

You are right and I really get your points but the truth remains that there are parents that actually choose the right course for their children and their children end up doing well in the end so let’s not dispute that fact . A creative post I must say
