WHAT IS TRANSPORTATION

Transport or Transportation is the movement of people, animals, and various types of goods and services from one place to another.

Today, we have several means of transport such as Roadways, railways, airways, waterways, cables, pipelines and space with each mode having its different techniques. Every mode has its infrastructure, automobiles and systems, and has its very own governing regulations.

Here is Yenagoa, Bayelsa state. In Nigeria, we have three (3) different modes of transportation, the Roadway, the Airway and the Waterway.

Transportation by Water location

For some time now, everything in Yenagoa is becoming overpriced, due to the rise in the price of the dollar against the naira.

Like any other third-world country, When the price of the US dollar is up, it leads to an increase in the prices of goods and services, even petrol as they now sell 189 Naira per litre, from about 110 Naira a few months ago, thus, increasing also the transportation costs.

In Yenagoa, the most commonly used transportation system is the roadway, varying from public to private transportation. For public transporters, only rickshaws (popularly known as Keke) are allowed to carry passengers within the capital whereas Taxis and Buses are for interstate movements, Bikes are allowed only in the rural areas, whereas boats convey goods and services from the capital to the interior villages.

With the majority of people using public transport. Being among the public transporters since I do not have a private car or bike, even though a have a bicycle for the short distance. I find myself using public transport every day to and fro from work, social activities and sports. When it comes to the transport fair it is quite on the high side now, about double the price 2-3 years ago. How the price is made up, is best known to the drivers of this public transport.

AIR POLLUTION

pxclimateaction-7129875_1280.jpg Image from Pixabay

Air pollution is a serious problem in many countries. It has negative health effects, such as asthma and lung cancer. Air pollution is caused by different sources such as factories and vehicles. The main cause of air pollution is burning fossil fuels for energy production or transportation purposes which releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulates, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment. It can include gaseous pollutants like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide; aerosols such as smoke and fog; liquid chemicals such as oil slicks; and particulate matter (PM).

The term "air pollution" refers to any process that alters air quality by increasing its amount of chemical components such as ozone (smog), nitrogen oxides (acid rain) or carbon monoxide. Air pollution can be defined as “pollution” when it adversely affects human health or safety through inhalation exposure but does not necessarily mean an increase in the toxic level of these substances within a given area over periods during which people might be exposed repeatedly throughout their lifetime

Yenagoa as at the time of writing this article is considered to have a moderate level of Air Quality from AccuWeather predictions. With a rating of 70 AQI (Air Quality Index). Every other day of the week still falls well under the moderate region.

According to Tomorrow.io the biggest pollutants of air in yenagoa today are Particulate matter (PM25) and (PM10).

The concentration level of PM25 is 4.2X higher than the acceptable value by World Health Organisation(WHO).

CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION

The primary origins of human-made air pollution include Automobile emissions, fossil fuel oils and natural gas to warm up homes, offshoots of manufacturing and power generation, especially coal-fueled energy plants, and fumes from chemical products.

Whereas Naturally released hazardous substances into the air, like smoke from wildfires; ash and gases from volcanic explosions; and gases, such as methane, which is secreted by decomposing organic matter in soils contribute to Natural air pollution.

HOW TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION

Air pollution is a global problem. It affects people's health, the environment and the economy. There are various solutions to air pollution but electric vehicles are one of them because they are better for both our health and our environment.

Electric vehicles use less energy than gas-powered cars and trucks do so they're better for the environment and make us all healthier as well!

One of the most important steps you can take to reduce air pollution is to use public transport. By using public transport, you will be contributing to your community and reducing your carbon footprint.

Another way to reduce pollution from cars is by using electric vehicles instead of gas-powered ones. Electric cars cost more than regular cars, but they have a longer range and are more environmentally friendly because they don’t emit any carbon emissions when driving. Electric bikes are also a good option if you want something that doesn’t consume much electricity but still gets you around town quickly!

If you want an even greener option than electric bikes or cars though then consider buying an electric scooter instead - these things are great fun as well as being environmentally friendly too! If all goes well then maybe one day soon we won't need any other forms of transportation anymore (and hopefully this happens soon).

Other simple steps to incorporate to reduce air pollution in our homes, office or cars include;

  1. Using a dehumidifier and/or air conditioner to curtail moisture.
  2. Keeping our trash properly covered to avoid attracting pests.
  3. Dusting surfaces and vacuum frequently to reduce particulate matter.
  4. having a proper ventilation system.
  5. Make sure that our gas stoves are well-ventilated.
  6. Do not forget to plant trees.

WHAT ARE ELECTRIC VEHICLES?

tesla-1738969_1280.webp Image from Pixabay

Electric vehicles are powered by electricity. They can be powered by solar panels, wind turbines, hydrogen fuel cells and the sun. Electric vehicles are environmentally friendly because they don't produce any harmful emissions or smoke like gasoline-powered cars does.

SOLAR POWER: The most common type of electric vehicle is solar-powered. This type of vehicle uses panels that convert sunlight into electricity that powers its motors and lights up its dashboard display panel (if you're lucky). Some people even use their solar panels to charge their phones!

WIND TURBINE: Another type of electric vehicle uses wind turbines as a source of energy production instead of fossil fuels like oil or coal; this kind of car works best in areas where there's lots of wind available for free power generation (such as on top mountains). You can find these types everywhere from California's mountains down through Colorado into Texas, and even beyond those borders if you look hard enough!

BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Electric vehicles have several benefits over traditional combustion engine vehicles. For example, electric cars are more efficient than their gas counterparts and reduce air pollution by eliminating tailpipes, exhaust pipes, and other emissions that contribute to smog. Additionally, they require less maintenance than internal combustion engines, no oil changes or tune-ups required! And because they’re usually made from lightweight materials like aluminium or plastic instead of steel (which has a higher melting point), electric cars can be easily repaired if something breaks down on the road: just call your roadside assistance company and have them tow it back home for free!

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Electric vehicles are considered the future of modern transportation. As they are considered cheaper to run than petrol vehicles.

They produce fewer emissions and can be recharged at home, so they don't need to be parked in a garage all day long like a petrol car would have to be. This is especially important if you live in an apartment or townhouse with no parking space available nearby (like we did).

The bad thing about electric cars is that they're not very practical for long journeys because their range isn't great compared with their petrol counterparts: 40 miles per charge on average compared with 150+ miles per tankful! But luckily there's another solution...

CONCLUSION

Air pollution is increasing around the world. It’s not just an issue in big cities, but in rural areas too. We hope this article has helped you understand what air pollution is and how it affects our health!

Unique water transport, you have made an amazing post

Good luck in this contest my friend

Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to me.

Honestly, transportation is one of the way in which we spent our money a lot. It seem at your place water transportation is more common than road Transportation.

Not exactly, the road is very much in use.. But goods are transported to and from the interior villages via the water ways.
The expenses of the road transport keeps increasing higher and higher and it is becoming a thing of concern.
Thank you for your time. Have a nice day.

Here in Yaoundé when you have 1000fcfa, instead of saving it to put something in your stomach you instead save for transport money...
Just to say that where ever we are we spend a lot of money in transport and it really pains.

Electric cars are good but it has the disadvantage of being very expensive and the main limitation as you said is that it has a very short range.
Thank your for your post

Very true, the cost of transportation in this part of world is alarming, as seeing in my post, distances that cost N50 a year ago is now doubled, due to cost of importing refined petrol and the rise of US dollar against the naira. Thus, making high cost of living..
Thank you for your time and Have a nice day.

Interesting and captivating I must commend my friend, you have showed us the various means of transportation in your city, and they are really beautiful.
The picture of you leaving the city got me laughing, because the bike man doesn't even knew what was going on behind him. Thanks for sharing and goodluck in this contest.

Hi dear. Indeed the cost of transportation is now on the higher side, and it is accepting each and everyone. I could, i could remember some years ago, we buy petrol at the rate of 80 naira. But it is now 185. The standard of living keeps on going higher on daily basis.

Talking about air pollution, i must say that most of the lung disease that people face today is due to the air pollution

Exactly, this is very true. It seems to have worsen too as people are indulging on deforestation and illegal refinery business here in Nigeria. Hopefully, we realised this and stop polluting the air more and more as it is becoming a global crisis with overwhelming effects.

Gosh it doesn’t matter where in the world we go, transport is expensive and air pollution is with us.
Thank you for a very informative post.
Ps: I’ve dropped my entry 😊

Exactly.. Transportation is becoming unbearable everywhere in the world, and its taking a chunk out of our pockets. Thank you for your support.

Saludos, amigo tiene mucha variedad de transporte y gasta mucho dinero mensual, el pasaje siempre sale caro, uno deja casi toda la quincena en pasaje.

It is what we have had to face due to the excessive rise in price of everything around us. Transportation is not left out as it takes s chunk out of our pockets. Thank you for your wonderful words. Have a nice day.
