Economic Activities - Diary Game | 26/08/2022| Shopping at the city bazar | #club75
Hello Everyone, It's nice to meet you all. I'm Damith from Sri Lanka. Here is my first appearance in this beautiful group. Hope to have some good experiences here.
My sister and I wanted to go to the market to buy some household essentials and materials for her business. Well, if you are a Sri Lankan and want to find anything at a surprisingly low price or on a large scale, you should definitely visit the Pettah market. When I said anything, yeah I mean it. Food items, fashion items, electronics accessories, clothing, antiques, glass/ steel/ cardboard/ plastic etc.
The Route and the location
So, went early in the morning, but has to stay in some places for a few other activities. It's around 1.5 hours journey. Due to the recent inflation in the country, the bus fares have been increased 2-3 times. It's 0.5 dollar journey from the public bus.
Pettah Market : Plus code - 6JRXWRPX+FX
We were around there at around 11.30 a.m. It's just like a full house. People are rushing around to complete their work. Actually, this is located in Colombo, the capital and the main economic center of the country. The public and private bus stand, and railway station are nearby. Therefore it's always packed.
The market is a collection of a number of streets. If you want to buy something, you should have an idea that which street has it.
For example,
- Main Street - Apparel shops
- China Street - Chinaware, gift items
- Maliban Street, Prince Stree, 1st to 5th cross streets, Front streets, etc.
Red Mosque
Well, here the majority of the sellers are Muslims. Even though I'm not Islam I love how they are faithful to their religion and faiths. Usually Friday from 12.30 they all go to the mosque for around an hour. Yesterday our timing was bad. So, we have to wait there. Even though the shops were filled with people they close them and went to do their ritual. In the middle of the market, there is a beautiful huge mosque. It's an iconic building.
Groceries
Meanwhile, we bought some food. I was amazed by the different types of grains. Not like usual, they are very even in color and size. Most of them were imported items from India. We did buy sprats, onions, grains, potatoes, etc.
Item | Price per kg |
---|---|
Dhal | Rs.400/ USD 1.13 |
Potata | Rs. 250/ USD 0.7 |
Rice | Rs.230/ USD 0..65 |
Sprats | Rs. 1600/ USD 4.5 |
Fashion Items
Well, we spend most of the time finding goods for my sister's business. She is sewing clothes, bags, etc from wool. So we did buy wool, pearls, items for decorations, etc. We spent around 100 dollars there. I will tell you about that later.
Well, there is something you should not forget to taste there. It's this pickle shop. A small boy is selling them. It's around 1 dollar and consists of wood apple, mango, June plum, guava, lovi, and Ceylon olive. A little bit too costly compared to ordinary. But it's pretty cool.
So, it becomes evening when we come home again. We were pretty tired. Because had to carry all the essentials by bus. But it was worth it.
So, that's it my friends! Hope you will enjoy that.
