OBESITY: HOW TO REDUCE OVERWEIGHT

Obesity or overweight can be described as excessive fat accumulation in the body in such a way that it becomes a risk to one's health. This usually happens when an individual takes in more calories than the amount needed in the body. The excess calories are then stored as body fat. Gradually the amount of fat in the body rises until it leads to overweight and full blown obesity. One can be said to be obese when the individual's BMI(Body Mass Index) exceed 30. Body Mass Index is a measure of the amount of fat in the body of an individual with respect to his or her weight and height. Several deaths has resulted in recent times from this disorder.

FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT

There are several factors that affects an individual's chances of gaining excess weight. Some include;

1. GENETICS:

Sometimes, hereditary can play a role to one's excessive weight gain. Variation in a particular gene can affect and lead to a pattern of inherited obesity in a family or generations (monogenic obesity).
However, a healthy lifestyle can conteract the effects of genes.

2. MEDICATIONS:

Sometimes, certain medications can alter a person's hormone or its side effect may be excessive weight gain.

3. SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE:

Physical inactivity can largely affect a person's chances of becoming obese. This is because, inactivity burns very few calories in the body leading to accumulation of excess calories which are stored as body fat as mentioned earlier.

4. UNHEALTHY DIETS AND MALNUTRITION.

Popular meals high in unhealthy fats, refined grains and sugar are large contributing factors to overweight. Meals containing vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains helps to control unhealthy weight gain.

EFFECT OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY.

Excessive fat in the body can result to serious health consequences. Unfortunately, these consequences can lead to long term suffering for families and individuals concerned.
Some of the effects of obesity includes;

  • It can lead to stroke
  • It can cause serious cardiovascular disease(heart disease)
  • It can result to type 2 diabetes
  • It can cause some types of cancer like; breast cancer,colon cancer or endometrial cancer.
  • It can result to musculoskeletal disorder such as, osteoarthritis.

HOW TO REDUCE OBESITY

Fortunately, obesity ad overweight is highly preventable. The important thing one needs to do is to maintain a balance between the amount of calories consumed per day and the amount of calories burned or used in doing work.
To achieve this, people need to do some certain things like;

  • Increase physical activity such as working, exercising etc.

  • Reduce intake of sugary foods and drinks.
  • Quit sedentary lifestyle ad get active
  • Adopt the eating of fruits ad vegetables on a daily basis.
  • Reduce the amount of fats consumed per day
  • Make conscious effort to take unsaturated fats rather than saturated fats
  • Ensure sure the eating of a well balanced meals containing the essential classes of food.
