Life During Difficult Times: What Does it MEAN to "Make a Difference?"

These days, people have more time on their hands to think about life; about the world; about their lives, in particular.

At the same time, most of us can end up feeling a little bit "trapped," due to various degrees of quarantine and mobility restrictions.

For many, this extra time to think about things often brings up thoughts about feeling helpless, and unable to make a difference.

We often fall into the trap of judging ourselves (and sometimes others) harshly because we don't feel like what we have to offer makes much of a difference. We feel very small and the issues of the world feel huge.

But "making a difference" doesn't mean that we need to expect ourselves to come up with a cure for world hunger, or — as the case might currently be — a fix for the Coronavirus.

Just here in our local neighborhood, people are making a difference simply by arranging time to visit and talk to some of the retired people who live alone... "across the fence," meaning that we share human contact while still observing the required "social distancing."

Similarly, some are helping their neighbors with "mobility issues" (or who are otherwise in "high risk" groups) by taking their grocery shopping lists to the market, so they don't have to arrange (and risk) doing it themselves, using a taxi.

Some people are helping out their neighbors by offering dog walking, where they take several dogs for walks around the neighborhood... the dogs have probably gone a little crazy, having only seen their house and a back yard for a long time!

Thankfully, we live on the outskirts of town so there's not a lot of traffic.

These things all are quite small, when you look at them, but everyone participating IS making a difference. Similarly, there are small ways in which you are (and can) make a difference where you are! Remember, what may seem very small to you, might be making you a hero in someone else's life.

Bright Blessings, and stay safe!
