in Steem Geography3 years ago

Hello friends, greetings to everyone from my side. My name is Nubanoe Padmore, and as my name rightly depicts, I am from the Northern part of Ghana specifically, Navrongo.
Navrongo is one of the towns in Ghana, known for its irrigation farming activities.
There are several crops that are grown in the town, in both the dry and rainy seasons. Notably of these crops are rice, maize, millet, beans, okra, and among several others. These crops have been so beneficial to the people in the town, and even beyond especially to the southern part of the country.

Due to the economic importance of these crops, there have been high demand on them and the higher the demand, the higher the rate of production. The people who are involved in the farming activities always make sure those food crops are constantly available, as everyone depends on them for a living.
During the dry season, the main source of water is the Tono irrigation dam, which is about 2km long and supplies about 3,000 hectres of land in the town, and with the aid of several canals from the dam. These crops are also cultivated during the rainy season, and this is the season in which many people are involved into the farming because of the abundance of water.
There are several challenges which the farmers face in their farming activities. Some of the crops are attacked by diseases, some lack the required nutrients due to their position on the land, and others are eaten by animals such as cattle, goats, birds and fowls, giving them lose of productivity. The time and the rate at which it rains is also a factor the affects the production output.

When the crops are ready to be harvested, they become somehow dry, and they are then harvested and dried in the sun. When they are well dried, they are stored in market sacks and sewed and sent home or sold out.

As we all know, rice, corn and millet are popular carbohydrates in the country, and the main source of energy for their body, which aid them in carrying out their activities and these can be found in most of the homes of the people in the town.
Their prices have been moderate and easily to be afforded, even the poorest can afford at least one bowl each of the crop grains. For example, a bowl of rice costs GH¢5, corn for GH¢7 and millet for GH¢12. According to the full bags, rice costs GH¢320, corn costs, GH¢180 and millet is unknown.
In terms of profit, rice is higher, follow by corn and then millet. One acre of rice farm is worth ten bags of rice, making an amount of GH¢3,200. Traders from the southern part of the country, come with cargo trucks, buy the crop grains and load them to their towns, where they are processed to finished and semi-finished goods.
Some of the food prepare with these crops include;
Rice- rice balls, plain rice and other dishes

Corn- Tuozafi, porridge, banku, kenkey and others
Millet- millet cakes, porridge, Tuozafi and others.
On the other hand, the crops that are rare in the town include, wheat, Bambara beans, beans and soya beans . These crops are mostly not produced in larger quantities due to low demand by the people. They are only cultivated by fewer farmers and either sold out or stored home for their personal use.

I say a very big thank you to @belenguerra, @bright-obias and @badsha1 for your guidance, and I invite you to have a taste of our dishes made from these crop grains, if you have never.
