Inside St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA (5 pics)

St. Louis Cathedral is located in the heart of old New Orleans and it is now known as the oldest Catholic cathedral still in operation in the United States.

The city of New Orleans was established in 1721 and 6 years later, in 1727, a church was erected at this location in honor of the King of France, Louis IX.

In 1788, a fire destroyed the church but a year later, the construction of a new church, which would be consecrated as a cathedral, began and was completed in 1794.

This is the Cathedral that we see today!

The outside clock was added in 1819, the central tower in 1820, the interior painting of the church and the altars was carried out in 1825 and in 1829 the organ was installed.

The organ is simple and the paintings are representative of Italian art of the time.

No big fluff inside and the flags give it a more modern air while remaining classic too.

Very well located on Jackson Square, one of the busiest squares in the city, it's hard to miss it.

This magnificent building with 3 bell towers does not go unnoticed.

Two identical buildings are on either side of the cathedral.

To its left is the Cabildo, the old town hall, and to its right, the Presbytery, which was later converted into a courthouse.

Nowadays, these 2 buildings are very interesting museums to visit located on this busy square in the heart of the city.
