Elephantine island, Aswan, Egypt (4 pics)

The Elephantine island is a small island located at the border between Egypt and Nubia.

It has been used in many ways throughout its history:

  • It was an good defensive site.
  • It was an great location for river trade.
  • It was a granite quarry.
  • It was also a fort.

All this has changed for a long time, here, a glimpse of todays everyday life, 2 fishermen discussing at the end of their hard work journey.

There are of course temples to visit, but since we had seen enough of them already, we opted for something different.

We chose to visit a banana plantation.

I had never seen one before and I must say I was impressed by the size of the "clusters", if you can call them that, and the quantity present on this small island.

There are several villages on the island as many Nubians live there.

While walking around and chatting with the locals, we were lucky enough to receive an invitation to share their meal.

What a delight it was!

We also had the chance to see them prepare everything, the spice blend was just perfect, I should have taken more notes to be able to reproduce it...

Time to say goodbye to this cool island and cross the Nile again in a Felucca.

Taking advantage of the ride to let yourself be rocked by the Nile
