Can We Be Less Judgmental?

Is this world getting more judgmental nowadays? I seem to think so. Just take a look at the comments on social media, although there are many positive comments, a significant number of these comments are rather judgmental. I have to admit that I am also one of the guilty parties.

There are so many ways to judge a person. We can judge his appearance, his character, his political and religious beliefs and his behavior. So why are we so prone to judge others? This has to do with our personal biases in the way that we perceive ourselves and others. We have a tendency to evaluate ourselves in a better light than others. For example, if we make a mistake, we tend to discount the damage inflicted by our mistake. On the other hand, when others make a mistake, we tend to amplify the damage done. We also understate our weaknesses and overstate our strengths.

We have developed our beliefs and our value system. We are of the opinion that these beliefs and values are right. As such those who do not subscribe to our beliefs and values must somehow be wrong. Perhaps they were misinformed or their upbringing was wrong. Once we developed this type of mindset, we have created a rift between ourselves and those who do not share our beliefs and values.

That is precisely why we all need to be less judgmental. We need to come to the realization that we are all humans and being humans, all of us can make mistakes. In many circumstances, it is much easier to spot the mistake committed by others, than to see our own mistakes. So who are we to judge others. We need to realize as well that new information and facts are being discovered every day. With the emergence of new information, some facts have been proven to be wrong.

Sometimes we judge a person's action based on our personal observations. Yes, we can see the actions but we are also unable to see the motivation behind these actions. We don't know how another person's journey was unless we have walked in their shoes. Everyone's journey is different, and many times we don't know enough to pass a judgment. I like to believe that everyone is trying to do the best that they can, given the circumstances that they are in and the resources that are available to them. With this mindset, we can be less judgmental.

Once we are less judgmental we are able to feel happier. Instead of judging a situation, we are able to accept the situation as it is. In that way instead of trying to change the situation, we can be fully present and savor these precious moments. This is what happiness is about.
