When people hear "agriculture", the first thing that comes to their mind is planting crops and raising animals. But there’s more to it than just hoe and cutlass, and farming in general. Agriculture has opened doors to so many other sectors, and one of the most interesting and fast-rising ones is agritourism.

Yes, I know that people will ask, “What’s agritourism again?” I would break it down to a way It would be easy to understand and relate with.

Define Agritourism and its role in Rural Development

What is Agritourism?

Agritourism can be seen the combination of agricultural activities and tourism simultaneously. It is when people visit farms or rural areas not just to farm, but to experience how farm life looks like, enjoy nature, learn litty things about crops, animals, and even participating in farming activities as a whole

Let’s say you carry your children to a pineapple farm to see how fruits are planted and even pick some with their hands – that’s agritourism. Or you visit a fish farm and the owner gives you a tour on how the pond works – that’s also agritourism.

Agritourism and Rural Development

One major contribution of agritourism is that it helps in boosting development in rural areas. Most times, people in the village depend only on farming to survive, and when there’s no good harvest, they find it hard to make money. But with agritourism, these farmers can make extra money from visitors.

Now taking a look at a farm in Jos or Ogun State where tourists come to see how some farm produce , example yam is processed. These visitors will buy food, maybe even lodge in one small guest house around, and buy souvenirs. That keeps the local economy moving!

Agritourism brings:

  • More money into village communities

  • Encourages young people to remain and work in rural areas instead of rushing to the cities, which sometimes does not work for them.

  • Helps local culture to be appreciated more and not forgotten. Just like for instance the EKPO festival which one of my friends @imohmitch talked about recently.

  • Encourages better facilities like roads, power, and even internet in some areas.

Talk about the Types of Agritourism

Types of Agritourism

Agritourism is not a one-sided thing. It has different types, and some of them will surprise you. Let me mention some common ones below:

  1. Farm Tours – People are invited to walk around the farm, see crops, animals, and maybe learn one or two things about farm work.

  2. Farm Stays – This one is for those who want full farm experience. You sleep in a farmhouse, wake up early, help feed goats or gather eggs, and enjoy homemade food.

  3. Fruit Picking (U-pick) – This is very fun. People come to farms during harvest season to pick their own fruits – mangoes, oranges, strawberries. It gives a kind of sweet satisfaction.

  4. Agricultural Festivals – Like when villages celebrate harvest time or yam festival. Visitors come, enjoy local food, dance, see farm produce on display.

  5. Training Workshops – Here, tourists or learners are taught something practical like snail farming, compost making, or even how to grow herbs, even at the back of your house.

Discuss on the Benefits of Agritourism

Why Agritourism is Good – The Benefits

Let’s not lie – it has many benefits

For farmers:

  • It gives extra income aside from the usual harvest money.
  • Helps them advertise their produce directly to visitors.
  • Gives them pride in their work. They feel appreciated.

For tourists:

  • It’s educational and relaxing. A break from city noise, hustle-and-bustle, and even stress.
  • They learn how food is grown, before it gets to the supermarket.
  • Some even go back home with farm produce.

For the community:

  • Boosts employment. Tour guides, drivers, cooks – everybody benefits.
  • Keeps the culture alive. Local dances, food, and dress styles are showcased.
  • Pushes for more investment in rural infrastructure and development.

My Personal Experience

To be honest, I haven’t had a full agritourism experience before, but I’ve visited farms that made me appreciate how peaceful and rich rural life can be. I remember going to a small cocoa farm once with my uncle. The smell of fresh cocoa and seeing how they dry the seeds made me respect the hard work behind that small chocolate bar we eat in town.

If I get a chance, I would like to visit places like Erin Ijesha or Obudu, not just for sightseeing but to join one of those farming tourism experiences. I am even considering opening a small poultry plus vegetable garden where people can come and learn how to raise layers or grow tomatoes.

The Way Forward in Nigeria

Here in Nigeria we have what it takes to make this happen, we have the land, the people, and the culture to make agritourism big. But awareness is still quite low. Most people don't even know it exists. The Government, and even private organisations need to work together to promote it.

We can:

  • Add agritourism to school agricultural tours/excursions
  • Organise national farm experience weeks
  • Give farmers small grants to prepare their farms for tourist visits

Conclusion

Agritourism is like the missing bridge between agriculture and the rest of the world. It lets people see, feel, and understand what farmers go through. It also adds colour, joy, and education to rural life.

Instead of always travelling abroad to see foreign zoos and gardens, why not visit our own local farms and experience real-life nature? With the right push, agritourism can change lives, lift communities, and open more people to the beauty of agriculture.

So next time when someone says farming is boring, don't argue with them just tell them to come and see for themselves.
