This is an evidence of the labour, patience and dedication of smallholder farmers whose lives are tied up in these colourful crops.

Among the African cuisines fresh pepper is not merely an ingredient. It is a hallmark of big taste, ethnic integrity and farm sustainability. There are hardly any meals cooked in most Nigerian households that will taste incomplete without the spicy touch of pepper. It is a staple used in cooking from jollof rice to accounts of soups, stew, and peppered meats that define the tastes and identity.

Cultivation of peppers is not a simple operation. It needs rich soil, tender irrigation and uncompromising sunlight. The farmers themselves have to be very careful with respect to the pests and diseases damaging their crops more often than not going organic or using some ingredients readily available in their vicinity. But regardless of these difficulties, a large number continue to engage in it due to the economic value of the pepper and due to its high demand. With a properly cultivated pepper farm, high revenues can be harvested at the time of harvesting and in cases where prices are high in the market.

The tomatoes, which are shown alongside with the peppers in the picture, are frequently cultivated together with them. They have common requirements and the two crops are the basis of the most treasured Nigeria cuisine. Fresh pepper and tomato make the most appropriate combination forming the basis of stews that serve millions of people a day.

The message on this market stall is not vivid, but strong: it is about the soil that is hand-worked, the waking-up to pick time, the labor of women and men in the fields and how rural economies flourish when one basket at a time.

Whether it is food or culture, livelihood, and connection, agriculture is not only about food. Next time you bite a spicy dish, do not forget that this spicy flavor was somewhere, perhaps in the field close to the place this picture was taken, where the person was working with love to produce to the products, which makes your table a bit warmer.

MODs Comment/Recommendation:

My mom would always say, "pepper is not food, mind the way you add it to your meals", that's because I love having enough pepper in my food. I love using it to cook jollof rice, it gives it an amazing flavour
