What's in the Palm Tree?steemCreated with Sketch.

I will show some animals that love palm tree dates!

The high palm tree is situated at the front door of our cottage and I cannot tell you what a mess I have to sweep up below the tree every morning.
Some of the complex residents suggested that I should cut the tree down, but then what would the wild animals eat?
A bit of sweeping is not going to kill me and the tree's fruit is loved by the animals.
Come let me show you!

First up this morning was the Red-faced Mousebird!

Look at the beauty of this indigent bird!
Local in South Africa and neighboring countries in Africa!

They can move their toes independently and I suppose they are called mousebirds because they love to crawl through the bushes!

Here's a little Cape White-eye happily singing his song!

Ah! Ever seen a squirrel eating palm tree dates?

At first he gave me a look to say; "Hey, I am eating breakfast here"!

Ah that one date nut looks like a suitable candidate for his stomach!

Happiness is a palm tree fruit in the mouth!

Finally, here is the Palm Tree at the front of our cottage!

Here is some information on the Red-faced Mousebirds!

"The red-faced mousebird (Urocolius indicus) is a species of mousebird or coly. It is a common in southern Africa from Zaire, Zambia and Tanzania south to the Cape. Its habitat is savanna with thickets, fynbos scrub, other open woodland, gardens and orchards".

"This bird is about 34 cm (13 inches) long, with the tail comprising approximately half the length. The crested head and breast are pale cinnamon with a red bill and eye mask. The rest of the upperparts and tail are blue-grey apart from a paler grey rump. The belly is whitish".

"The sexes are similar, but juveniles lack the crest and have a green mask. Their call is a "tree-ree-ree whistle", and regularly called in multiple repetitions. Red-faced mousebirds make the same call whether in-flight or perched".

"The red-faced mousebird is a frugivore which subsists on fruits, berries, leaves, seeds and nectar. Its flight is typically fast, strong and direct from one feeding area to another".

"This is a social bird outside the breeding season, feeding together in small groups, normally of about half a dozen birds, but sometimes up to 15 or more. They fly and interact in tight collections. It engages in mutual preening and roosts in groups at night. It is more wary than other mousebirds".

"These sedentary birds breed between June to February. The nest is a large untidy cup of plant material lined with material such as sheep wool. The clutch is 2-6 eggs which hatch in about two weeks".

A first for me here!
This is a top quality post and not one comment on it ???
I can only think it's because I posted very late in my efforts to catch up due to the power cut offs the we have here in the country.

Now I feel better, as there is one comment on the post, even though it's my own!

Wow I didn't even think wildlife would eat those fruits.. It's the first time Ive heard or seen of this even though we had a palm tree for over 20 years.

Please don't cut up that tree😁🌿🌴

Hahaha, no plan to cut the tree down my friend.
Maybe you should keep a closer watch on your palm's fruits when they ripen?
Where are you and do you have a lot of wildlife?
Blessings!

Hehe no our palm tree was cut up a few years ago. So I won't be able to observe it now. But I know of a few places that has palm trees maybe I could take a day or two or observer it.. Maybe hold a picnic somewhere.

I am from Bloemfontein. We recently moved to a small farm in beinsvlei just outside of Bloemfontein.

So great to be on a farm out in nature my friend.
Our first stop was also on a friend's apple farm when we moved down here, but she died of cancer and now we are are in a town.
Nothing like farm life!
Blessings!

Great shots Sir Stephen! I’m glad you didn’t cut the date tree down. It would be a shame as the birds and the squirrel love it.

Wouldn't ever think of cutting the tree down Lady Jo.
I have never cut a tree down in my life and don't intend to start now.
Planting trees is more my game.
Blessings and thank you!

wow beautiful photographs of bird and squirrel. thanks for share with us.

Thank you and that palm tree certainly has some beautiful visitors my friend!
Blessings!

Blessings and hope your chest is improving!

The antibiotics I stat tonight and now they will kick the infection and I will be feeling better ina couple of days, making it easy now and resting up mostly

A good thing for you is the enforced rest my friend.
We are difficult when it comes to resting, so mind that you don't become impatient and try to rush things.
Blessings!

Yes indeed it is good to have the rest its most likely what I need, the antibiotics are knocking me a bit but they also will be knocking the infection so thats all good ;)

Oh, I seriously dislike antibiotics JJ, especially the part where one has to complete the whole course, even if you feel better.
But yes, they are very good at knocking infections.

Ohh me to thats why I put off taking them for a day but it became more clear I had an infection so I had to, and these ones I am on for 10 Days I used to never finish them once i felt better but now I get nagged by both the Dr and my Wife that I should LOL

Hahaha, sorry that I find this amusing, as we are in the same boat JJ.
Marian and the quack are also forever on my case.
But he is a good doctor and now I get a chest injection every 5 years, as it protects me against chest infections. Haven't had any infections since they started the injections.
Blessings!
