A Midnight Beauty!steemCreated with Sketch.

A Huntsman spider of the Rainspider species came to visit!

Our little dog Troy had an urgent need and Marian (my wife) opened the door so that he could go and do his business in the garden.
On her way back into the house, she saw this huge big spider sitting next to the door and she called me. He was obviously sitting there to catch lizards.
Let's see some more of this beauty!

Like I said, it was late night and the moon cast some ideal shadows to hide the hunter!

But we lit him up with our flashlight and if any person that is scared of spiders would see this, they would scream and run for the hills Lol

Amazing how this lamp casts a lovely butterfly shadow!

Now I told you that this guy is big and here I am holding a 500 ml bottle next to him with my one hand, while snapping with the camera in my other hand! His size here is about 3 bricks high.

They are nocturnal hunters that hide and sleep during the day and feast at night!

I so wanted him to lift his head, but he just stuck tighter to the wall as I breathed on him.
4 eyes at the top and another row of 4 eyes below the top row. Pity he was camera shy as I also wanted to show you his fangs! Lol

Here's more information about this guy!

"Huntsman spiders"

"Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Chelicerata
Class: Arachnida
Order: Araneae
Infraorder: Araneomorphae
Family: Sparassidae"

"Huntsman spiders, members of the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae), are known by this name because of their speed and mode of hunting".

"They also are called giant crab spiders because of their size and appearance. Larger species sometimes are referred to as wood spiders, because of their preference for woody places (forests, mine shafts, woodpiles, wooden shacks)".

"In southern Africa the genus Palystes are known as rain spiders or lizard-eating spiders. Commonly they are confused with baboon spiders from the Mygalomorphae infraorder, which are not closely related".

"More than a thousand Sparassidae species occur in most warm temperate to tropical regions of the world, including much of Australasia, Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean Basin, and the Americas".

"Several species of huntsman spider can use an unusual form of locomotion. The wheel spider (Carparachne aureoflava) from the Namib uses a cartwheeling motion, while Cebrennus rechenbergi uses a handspring motion".

So we left him to enjoy his hunting and went back to bed. These spiders are a great boon to our gardens as they control pests and bugs, and all kinds of other nasties - even snakes and mosquitoes. It is not a good idea to kill them, as they fear humans and will only attack when they feel endangered. Leave them and let them be on their way, and you will have a great pest controller.
If I see him again then he will deserve a nickname, and we might just call him "Rex" short for "T-Rex". Hahaha...

It seems that the power company here in South Africa forgot to stick to their loadshedding schedule, as the power to Cape Town was supposed to be cut off now.
That's why I have decided to post right now, as we don't know what's going to happen with the power cut offs later on today!

We hope that you have enjoyed the pictures of this magnificent animal and thank you for visiting a post by @papilloncharity

Ahhhhh!!!!! I have always wanted to visit South Africa... but now.... rethinking this! 🤣😂

I don’t think I would ever sleep again if I saw a spider that size near my house! It’s cool, but happy this story is yours and not mine. 🤣😂😄

Hahaha, firstly, we are in the farming areas my friend.
I want to deed him so that he can get bigger and then I can use him as a cart horse, or a cart spider Lol.
Only joking as I am quite happy to have him protect my front door. No criminal will come near hahaha.
Blessings!

Not that I am scared of spiders and I am not a big fan of them LOl and that one looks os big in your shots, love that moon shot, and that is cool the butterfly-like shadow

have a godo weekend my friend

Marian will have a heart attack if I kill a spider JJ.
This one is certainly huge, but we leave him in peace.
I didn't just want to place the spider shots, as the moon and butterfly lamp shade just complete the story so much better methinks.
Blessings!

I dont like killing them either to be honest if I leave them alone and they leave me alone were all happy :)
And yes I agree the post as a whole worked well

Thank you JJ, I will pop out later to see if he is still around.
Maybe put out some of the robin's worms to see if he will eat it.
Blessings!

This just shows how caring you are :)

Hahaha, thank you for being kind my friend.
Blessings!

me kind never just honest :)

Love you my friend.
Blessings!

I’m not scared of spiders but I’ve never encountered one of this size. I’m glad you let it go about it’s business, Sir Stephen. When I see a spider in the house I pick it up in a napkin and place it outside. I don’t think I would pick that big one up!

I was thinking that if this big guy wants to hang around here my friend, that I would try to befriend him, but let's wait and see.
Great of you to understand the role of spiders in the eco system.
No, never try to pick a big one up, as they will feel threatened and bite.
Rather place a small carton box in front of him, and encourage him to go in by prodding his backside gently with a twig.
Blessings!

Thanks for the tip for carrying big spiders outside. We don’t have any spiders that big here, Sir Stephen..thank heavens!

That's good to hear Lady Jo.
Keep on taking care of the small ones.
Blessings

Rain really is bringing out the big unusual, what a grand specimen protecting your front door Stephen.

We had two power cuts today, early hours of the morning and again between 8 and 10 am.

@tipu curate

Thank you Lady Joan, I will check if he has made our place his own.
Maybe I can get a miniature dog collar and chain and take him walkies hahaha.
Our 10 o clock power cut didn't happen and I don't know if the 6pm is going to. But one cannot take any chances and we will shut down from 5:30 just in case.
Thank you for the kind tipu thingy

We have the big hunting spiders come live inside the house every so often, cruise around from room to room on the ceiling they are fascinating and we just share the space.

Two power outages yesterday, so far so good today. It is raining, why no surprise I have planned a family braai at lunchtime.... Almost always rains when I whisper anything about a braai at my house.

No time here now Lady Joan as switch off is at 6pm.
Will have to come back as rushing to get a few replies in.
My post took a long time but thankfully posted.
Blessings!
