You haven't heard that term bandied about? It's any number of things (shenanigans) that can be used to manipulate the news that's dispensed to the public through the news media. One way to fake news, is to not report on news that might be damning to someone the news people like and want to protect, or to report shifty stories about someone they don't like, which they usually say comes from "Unidentified Sources," which protects them from lawsuits.
The free press in America doesn't seem to be very "free" anymore. It seems more controlled and biased to me.
