The nurse - Chapter 2

Jesse parked the car and eyes followed her as she walked inside.  She was offered a table, but Matthew wasn’t there yet, so she declined and decided to wait at the bar.  She ordered a whisky sour and felt comfortable sitting at the bar alone.  Her father owned a bar, and she used to go there in the afternoons to do homework.  

There were not many people in the restaurant, and she had a good view across the tables.  At the opposite side of the bar sat a good looking fellow, probably waiting for someone.  He looked quite agitated and tapped with his finger on the bar to attract the barman.  He ordered another drink and looked relieved when the barman placed the drink in front of him. He must have had a rough day. 

Jesse ordered herself a drink and was halfway through it when she received a text from Matthew about a hospital emergency and he was on his way.    

The barman placed some peanuts on the counter for the customers and went to the back to get some clean glasses.  Jesse took her last sip and as she put her glass down, she caught a glimpse of the attractive man at the bar and smiled at him.  She didn’t realize it immediately but suddenly realized that he was choking, and she jumped up to go and assist. 

She hit him hard on his back and told him to lift his arms. She hit him twice and then saw a peanut flying through the air.  

He coughed a little but looked a lot better after taking a sip of his drink. 

“You saved my life.” 

“Well, at least I knew what to do.  I am a nurse at Saint Mary’s hospital.  I’m Jesse.  Pleased to meet you. "

“I’m Joe. I wish it could have been under better circumstances, Jesse. Today was a hard day for me, and if it wasn’t for you it might have been the last one as well.”

Jesse smiled. He seemed like a kind person.  

“I’m glad I could help. Better leave those peanuts alone.”

“Can I make it up to you? Can I at least buy you a drink?”

“Well I’m actually waiting for someone, but he is still at the hospital.  Perhaps we could have one drink.”

Joe ordered drinks and they started chatting.  They clicked immediately and when Matthew finally arrived half an hour later, she was actually sad to leave.  She excused herself and he thanked her again for saving his life.  

Joe watched as Jesse and Matthew walked to their table.  Perhaps it was fate that brought him to this part of town tonight.  Perhaps he was meant to meet Jesse, but all he knew was that he wanted to see her again.  He hoped that she and her date was not serious, but he knew that they were not meant to be together.  

The minute he looked into Jesse’s eyes, his heart melted, and he knew that she was the one for him.  At least he knew where she worked, so it would be easy to track her down.  

Jesse and Matthew had a nice dinner, but Jesse became irritated after a while because Matthew only talked about himself.  She was very glad when the night was finally over and she came with her own transport.  Matthew still wanted to go dancing, but she faked a headache, thanked Matthew for a lovely evening and then got out of there as quickly as possible.
