Steemit Engagement Challenge Season8 Week1: What is the value of life?
Good day once again to everyone, my name is oluwatimileyin and I welcome you to a new season of engagement challenge and I hope I'm as glad as you are for the new season.
I welcome you to my participation in the week 1 Engagement contest with the title: What is the value of life?.
I disagree with the usage of death penalty for punishment of crimes, here are my reasons:
My primary reason why i oppose the death penalty punishment is the possibility of executing an innocent person for the wrong crime. This is because despite some legal procedures, mistakes can still happen, and executing an innocent person is a situation that cannot be undone.
The legal system is not perfect, and errors can happen at every stage, including evidence gathering, trial, and sentencing. Therefore, the chance of executing an innocent person is a strong argument against using the death penalty.
Secondly, the death penalty punishment is often used more frequently on people that are vulnerable, like people from low-income backgrounds. This bias makes the justice system unfair, because this are the people that can't afford a good lawyer to fight for their case.
However, the death penalty is not as effective to reduce crime rate. The threat of the death penalty does not really reduce the crime rates when compared to other forms of punishment, such as life imprisonment and jail time.
Yes, the death penalty is part of the law in some part of Nigeria, mostly in the north where they practiced Sharia Law, and this penalty is imposed for certain crimes such as murder, treason, and blasphemy.
However, it is important to know that the use of the death penalty is a highly controversial issue, and opinions on its implementation vary widely. Some sets of group might argue that it is a necessary and appropriate form of punishment for severe crimes, while others oppose it on moral, and ethical grounds especially when considering human feelings in the sense that it is not possible to create life so why should some people consider taking it.
Those who oppose the death penalty argue that it is an inhumane and cruel form of punishment that violates fundamental human rights, including the right to life. And also, the risk of executing innocent people is also strong arguments against its implementation.
Regardless, the decision whether to implement or abolish the death penalty is a matter for society and the community ethical beliefs, and understanding of justice, this is why this penalty is only practiced in some part of the country where the crime rates are higher.
Yes, there have been several cases of the death penalty being imposed in Nigeria. A notable case involving the death penalty in Nigeria is the sentencing of a Man called Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, also known as Rev King, for the murder of a church member in 2006.
In 2007, Ezeugo, the leader of the Christian Praying Assembly, was sentenced to death by hanging by Lagos High Court for the murder of a woman named Ann Uzoh, a member of his church. Ezeugo was accused of pouring petrol on Uzoh and setting her on fire after she told him that she left the husband because of his abusive behavior.
After several appeals and legal battles, the Supreme Court of Nigeria gave Ezeugo's death sentence in 2016, stating that the evidence presented against him were absolute facts and that the courts were right in their decision.
The case of Rev King is one of the most high-profile death penalty cases in Nigeria's recent history, with many religious and political figures weighing in on the issue, but despite that, he got the needle for his crime regardless.
In conclusion, despite Death Penalty been use as a form of punishment, death penalty is not an effective, or justifiable way to deal with crime. The risk of executing innocent individuals, the biased use of the death penalty, and its ineffectiveness are all reasons why i oppose its use.
Other forms of punishment, such as life imprisonment, can be a more effective way to protect society while upholding the principles of justice and fairness in the society. I would like to invite @yakspeace, @Lhorgic, and @jueco to participate in this contest.
This is a really bad law of every country and i full agree with you because on that days in our country the rules of law also are not equal for everyone, That's why many our youth take suicidea.
By the way thanks for sharing this wonderful post dearm Good luck for your participation. I also invite you to visit my blog and engage with me.
When it comes to equality, I believe the death penalty doesn't stand as the case differs base on the level of your vulnerability, the higher income people can afford to pay for good prosecutors while other can't.
Yes you're right dear, Hope one day everything will be fine and all will happy.
