Why Taking Care of Our Environment?

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

Our lives is our environment and our environment is our lives. We can not separate the two. If there is no environment, there is lo life, and the environment is created also to contain life. For instance, if a man is living in a place where there is no any road linking to his abode except one. He has been advised to try and create another road that can serves as alternative, but he refuses and did not heed to peoples advice. Now, one day, it rained heavily such that the rain caused flooding and the only road that links the man's house to the town where he can get what to eat was blocked. Then, the man tried to escape the peril but there was not any way to go out of the flooding till his lost his life. Had he heeded to the warning and advice of the people, he would have escaped this unforeseeable danger. Do you see why we should take care of our environment?

More so, we ought to take care of our environment because it has direct impact on our health. It is popularly said that "health is wealth". Yes! It is. Also, environment is health. Healthy environment gives birth to healthy living. It is also important to know that our economy also rely greatly on the condition of our environment. We all know the intense situation we faced in 2019 and 2020 during the Covid 19 lock down and know how the economy and the world peace revolved round this pandemic. There has been so many outbreak of disease due to the deaf ear so many have turned to taking care of the environment.

Another reason why we should take care of our environment is that agricultural produce solely depends on having clean environment. The effect of greenhouse gases which is been released by fossil fuel we use is very dangerous to plant and both terrestial and aquatic animal. Global warming which has been a long life challenges is also the effect of the fossil fuel. More will be said on this later.

My Participation in Achieving Clean Environment — Renewable Energy Training

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

I have took part in many activities that involved clean environment. I will start with my participation in renewable energy training. I believe that one of the ways to have a sustainable environment is the use of clean energy or renewable energy. Non-renewable energy like coal, fossil fuels are doing more harm to our environment. Hence there is a need to increase the use of renewable energy. Renewable energy like solar energy, bioenergy, geothermal, wind energy are energy which do not have harmful effect on the environment. Bit then, not many people know or have the understanding of this.

Energy Training at Profit and Energy Comfort Limited

When I was in year 4 in college, I registered for a paid training on renewable energy at Profit and Energy Comfort Limited, one of the leading energy company in the northern part of Nigeria. In the training, I was thought how importance renewable energy is to our environment. Consequently, the knowledge of load distribution and installation of solar panel and accessories were gained. Not only that, I also gained the knowledge of biomass and how to produce gas from the waste, and animal dungs. It was an exciting moment as the participant were paired in a group for group project.

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

In Nigeria, graduates of university or Higher National Diploma graduates are mandated to observe a year compulsory national service. After my graduation at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, I was posted to the Nigerian Naval Engineering College, Sapele where I used my experience in Mechanical Engineering to impart knowledge on both National Diploma Students of Marine and Weapon Engineering departments of the school.

Environmental Protection Group Sanitization and Sensitization day

As part of the activities of National service I joined the community development service of my interest I joined the Environmental Protection and Sanitation group. This is a community development service whose aim is to educate the citizens on their environment and teach them sanitation procedures of maintaining their environment for the aim of providing disease free community, and also to work for the protection of the natural resources, and to provide safety for people in the society. I was the treasurer of the group and I was in charge of all aspects of financial management, working closely with the President and other members of the group to safeguard the group's finances. We went out on many occasions to carry out our duties.

My Participation in Achieving Clean Environment — Waste to Wealth Workshop at Planet 3R, Ibadan Nigeria.

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

Last year around the mid of the year, I saw an advert on how to convert waste to useful product. I quickly registered for it because I know that waste is a major issue which contribute to environmental pollution.

Fortunately for me, I was selected for the training. I was very happy to be called for the training. The training was sponsored by Eleven Eleven Twelve Foundation together with Planet 3R. The training was a week training and really enjoyed every part of the training. I learnt how to convert pure water sachet nylon to useful product like school bags, baskets, clothes etc. An example of the useful product made is a bag in the screenshot below.

IMG-20210602-WA0018.jpg
Waste to Wealth Workshop participants at Planet 3R

Now let me quickly tell you the procedure of turning nylon waste to useful product.
The process involved in turning waste to useful product is a 3 big R which is also part of the name of the company "Planet 3R". The 3R stands for Recovery, Recycling an Reusing

Step 1 — Recovery

This first step in converting nylon to useful product is to recover waste from the environment. Recovery is a process of sourcing for waste to be used, separating it and cleaning it to make it deem fit for use. Recovery waste from the environment is the first step we took. We sourced for nylon waste from the environment. Then after that, we separated the waste. This is because, the main focus of the training is turning nylon waste to useful product. Then we washed the waste with water and soap to clean it very well for it be usable.

IMG-20210602-WA0007.jpg
Waste Cleaning

Then after we finished washing, we spread the nylon on the sun to make it dry as seen in the picture uploaded below.

IMG-20210602-WA0012.jpg
Waste Drying

Step 2: Recycling

Recycling is the next step in turning waste to useful product. This stage has to do with the processes in turning nylon to useful product. It is the stage between waste recovery and reusing. In this case, weaving is done on the nylon before converting it to desired product. The first thing we did is to wind the warp on the winding machine. Then after that we took the warp to the warping machine to do the arrangement. Then we took the arrangement to the weaving machine and set it up for weaving.

IMG-20210602-WA0017.jpg
Waste Recycling

IMG-20210602-WA0015.jpg
Waste Recycling

We weaved he nylon waste which we have cleaned thoroughly on the weaving machine as we can see in the screenshot below. This is the recycling process of waste conversion method in this subject.

IMG-20210602-WA0009.jpg
Waste Recycling

Step 3: Reusing

The last step is the reusing. This is the stage where we convert the weaved waste into the products and we start using them. The weaved nylon can be converted to many products. In the picture below, we see bags. This is one of the product we achieved. The weaved nylon can also be converted to slippers, laptop bag, key holders, earrings, etc.

IMG-20210602-WA0000.jpg
Waste Reusing

The major benefit of this is that it reduces waste from the environment. I believe if many organizations and individuals look into how waste like sachet water nylon waste can be converted to useful product, the environmental pollution in this line will be maximally reduced.

My Participation in Achieving Clean Environment — 2021 World Environment Day

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

Another important way to contribute our quota as citizens and individual is to rise and stand for global initiative like world environment day. The major aim or purpose of this is to sensitize and sanitize our community. This will help us create awareness for clean environment and help us to live in a disease free environment.

World Environment Day in Ibadan, Nigeria

As part of my passion to contribute my own quota to the environment, I joined 2021 Environment Day Team in Ibadan. We all met at Mokola where we grouped ourselves into 4 and we went to various part of the city to clean the environment and to do sensitization.

Conclusion

IMG_20211028_200804_436.JPG

In this post I have discussed and told you about my different participation in community service and workshop towards achieving a clean environment. I believe that clean environment is key to living a disease free environment and even for economic development. Clean environment is not just a local issue, it is a global issue that we all must tackle together. It is important that we rise together. The early we rise and the more we rise and tackle this global issue the easier it becomes in solving this long standing issue.

You make a very valuable reflection on why we should take care of the environment that surrounds us, because it affects our health and provides us with food, with global warming being one of the great problems that threatens the lives of all beings.

How interesting that you will be trained in the use of renewable energies, in addition to obtaining knowledge about the use of biomass, in Bogotá Colombia, there is a place that generates energy from it. I can read in your publication that you are a person very dedicated to conserving the environment and teaching others to do it as you are doing now with this very complete publication. Every time you find an opportunity to learn, you do it, like you did with Planet 3R, a project that looks great. It has been a pleasure reading you, learning from you.

Amigo es una hermosa labor la que haces en tu ciudad llevado campaña que sensibilicen a la persona a tener un ambiente más limpio. Saludos y exito.🤗

Yes. It our responsibilities to rise and take care of our environment. Thank you for engaging!

I think I read something related with Installations of solar panels over the houses in Nigeria. This is such a huge initiative for the sake of environment to save electricity. I hope this can be implemented soon in my country. I don't think isn't widely used yet. Also loved to see the pics of these groups you get involved where they're working together for a better world to everybody. 😊 Good entry post.

Yes. The adoption and utilization of renewable energy is increasing. And so many countries are using their natural resources in their reach to making sure that country meet up with energy demand. For example, Malaysia is known to be the top palm oil producing country and she is using Crude Palm Oil (CPO) to produce biofuel, bioproduct and biopower.

Regarding your fact about solar energy not widely adopted, yes it is true. There may be so many reasons for that. We have different types of renewable energy - solar energy, wind energy, biomass, thermal, etc. The adoption of each depend on the geographical location and natural resources available in each country. For example, solar energy can be effectively used where there is steady sun. Wind energy depends on the movement of the atmospheric air, it will be difficult to use wind energy where there is no steady air because the velocity that will start the turning of the blade must not be less than 5m/s or so. So, the adoption of any of this renewable energy depends on the natural resources available in different location.

Thank you for engaging, friend.
