Crowe garnered international attention for his role as Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius in the landmark epic Gladiator (2000), directed by Ridley Scott, for which Crowe won multiple awards, including an Oscar for best actor. Recently Russell Crowe has revealed that he struggled to fully enjoy his 2001 Oscar win because he felt less worthy than his director.
